Re: Fostex to Computer

Hey there everyone...back again...I'm determined to make this work somehow...My girlfriend connected a walkman into the microphone connector of her computer and recorded sound into small recorder program that came with computer...now we know that works..whew!!...now what program do most suggest to record country music to blast to cd's? also do we need two in's to get sound from DMT 8VL...since I need two outs from fostex? any help would be appreciated...Thanks..

Alvin,

Most regular old "came-with-the-computer" sound cards have 1/8" stereo jacks for their inputs. Your DMT-8VL, if it's like my DMT-8, has 2 RCA main outputs and an optical digital output. There are two approaches to hooking up the DMT-8VL to the computer:

1. Get a cable with a 1/8" Stereo plug on one end and two RCA plugs on the other end. You can get this at almost any computer store, Radio shack, or music shop. Don't get the dirt cheap three dollar kind, as it probably won't live very long. Plug one end into your Fozzie and the other into the computer and follow the same procedure you used when recording from the walkman.

2. Get one of these things:

and install it in your computer (assuming it has USB). Run an optical cable from the Fozzie to the device and record with your audio program. You'll have to set whatever audio program you use to use the edirol device as a source. This will probably sound better than the above route, but it's 100 bucks plus the cost of an optical cable. Probably better to try the above route to see how things turn out.

As far as what program to use, it may be a good idea to go to the computer recording forum and explain your question there for some suggestions on what programs to get. Any recording program that can save a stereo, 16-bit, 44.1 khz WAV file can create a file that's suitable for CD burning with any old CD burner program. There are other programs that are designed to make this easier, though.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted out.
