Re-Amping options

Hi All,

Are there any other options, preferably cheaper yet still sonically good, to the ReAmp or Radial's X-Amp? May be DIY? I whant to record bass guitar direct and mic the amp later - thinking this will help bleed while tracking in my small space.

a PASSIVE di box used in reverse will work

I have never re-amped a bass, I wonder if a bass amp would react very poorly to a line level signal at very low volume? On a guitar amp this sounds terrible......I don't know, have you tried it?
 
I've gotten into re-amping my bass tracks. My first question, what setup do you have for recording? I'm currently running the firepod, and I run a DI-box that can split the signal. I throw a mic infront of my custom cabinet (armed with 12"s) and run that to CH1 on the firepod and take the direct signal from the DI box and run that to CH2. I haven't noticed any level issues, but it's defently a great way to get some of the low-mid range that isn't as present on the direct recording (while keeping the clarity).

All of Lamb of God's "Ashes of the Wake" used reamping on the bass and then blended to taste.

I'm sure the Little Lab's Red Eye works well but I'd like to explore cheaper options first. Any other suggestions would be great.

We're not talking about the same thing. I'm not looking to split the signal at the time of performance, I want to record the direct signals via DI at the time of performance, then send it to an amp an another time. But as far as my set up, I'm using a 002r rig w/external pre's with a Countryman DI for direct bass tracks. Eventually I want to send that signal into my Ampeg B100.

So a passive DI will go the opposite direction if one works out the in-and-out connector issue? That sounds too good to be true! I'll have to try it. So far I haven't tried a direct line out of my 002r, I might one day but time for experimenting is sadly limited. When I have time, I got to be down to business.

I'm not metalhead, but a passive DI box does indeed work in reverse. The transformer in there that will magnetically couple signals from the HiZ end to Low Z end and vice-versa.
 
Only thing, the line level signal coming out of my 002r will be a lot hotter than the mic level signal coming out of a typical passive DI. So wouldn’t the signal coming out of the DI to the amp now be a lot hotter than what normally comes out? What are the ramifications of this? Damage DI? Lower the output signal?
 
I would just try starting out with the lowest possible output level to the DI box and go up from there until you get a useable signal to the amp. However the DI box will lower the level of the signal when reversed like this, that is what will make this work in the first place, so I don't think you'd have a problem.

just turn down the fader (it really is that easy)
 
Anyone find out if this works? I was looking on the Reamp page, and they claim this isn't possible:

I'd like to try this, but I don't currently have the gear to do it. I don't any DI's, the closest thing I have is an ART Tube MP.

What would be the most cost effective option out there that would give reasonable results?

I do as you said. I record a direct track, and then later on reamp out of my fostex vf16ex. I am using a Radial JDI passive direct box and it works great.
This is what I do:
I am re-amplifying the recorded track out of the Fostex Vf16ex. (You need an xlr female to female adapter.)

1. Vf16ex into a mixer.

2. Then connect from the xlr out of the mixer into the xlr "output" on the radial.
In doing so, you reverse the polarity of the radial, and this makes the xlr "output" of the radial function as an xlr input- (you need to use a female to female adapter to do this).

3. Then I connect from the 1/4" "input" of the radial into the input of the amp.

I find that it is easier for me to get a good sound when I reamp later instead of mic'ng at the same time when I'm recording the direct track. I can fiddle around more with the mic placement while hearing the recorded track and mic'd track together. I have been using an sm57. And using a sp b1 further back and mixing it with the sm57 sounds excellent. I am interested in picking up a shinybox ribbon mic to see how that would sound.
