I usually record rock bands cus that's what my studio is mainly specialising in.but this one rock band is using a rapper. i'venever recorded a rapper, which is quite surprising since i've been recording for ages. Anyone got good tips? i have loadsof equiptment so you do'nt have to limit yourself with ideas:-)

lol! ok, it's gonna be a lot of experimentation with all the compressors, me thinks!! lol. so no one who records rappers has a favoured mic or anything?

Only tip I would have would be to not open up for business that day.

I did a simaler band not too long ago and I ended up taking down the series of condensers I was trying and ended up with a SM-58 so the singer (singer??) could scream into the mic. It was such a long day.

I had the same situation just this past Saturday in my home studio. I have nothing
against rap, but all that screamin',cursin'
motherf#@k this and motherf@#k that,kinda
drove me insane after about 4 hours.I foud my self compressin and de-essin the shit out of them vocals. I used 4 SM57's for the vocals. They also had no idea, what kind of drum loop they wanted (they only had their lyrics and no idea what kind of music backing) so I spent 2 hours trying to program a beat to their liking and finding some kind of keyboard sample. These were young kids and had no sense of organization
though their lyrics were pretty good.
The most important thing in recording rappers; PATIENCE! A whole lot of it! A VERY interesting session I must say.

actually, i use an audio technica 4033, a pop filter, and set my compressor as fast as possible. i do work for other rappers as well as my band.

often times, i'll set the microphone height slightly above the rapper's head so that the diaphragm hits the rapper somewhere between the nose and eyes, and then i angle it down slightly toward the rapper's mouth.

however, if the rapper pops off with that raspy shout sh*t the way that mine does, you'll quickly realize that the best way to get a good take is to set him/her further away from the mic.
