Rane ms-b1 preamp -> M-Audio Delta 44 question...

do I need one of those hi to lo-Z cables to connect the two? I get confused about impedance matching....

You'll need an XLR-1/4" TRS cable. The Delta takes 1/4 balanced or unbalanced signals at line level, which is what will be coming out of the preamp.

Something like this
 
right, I knew I needed the XLR to 1/4" cable, but some of them have the high to low Z transformer on the 1/4" end... scrubs, the cable in your link does not appear to have that, and I was thinking that I would need it.

You don't need a transformer. Just a three-conducter cable with XLR female to 1/4" TRS. Get a good quality and servicable cable.
