Randall guitar speaker Isolation Cabinet

This thing looked pretty cool for home recorders who want to record their amps at full blast without waking the neighbors/spouse/etc. Especially because you can get a real amp tone without resorting to the POD, J-Station, Boss, Yamaha modeling crap.

It's not a new concept, but I've never seen Randall's speaker iso cab. Not bad for under $200. The auction ends in an hour.

How does it compare to an actual mic'd cab?

I'm curious because so many things that influence a speaker cabinet are missing. For example, room ambiance and cabinet design. Granted, room ambiance doesn't play much of a role when sticking a SM57 into a grille. However, cabinet design, such as number of speakers, wood chioce, open/closed back, may play more of a role.

Thus, I am curious if it is comparable to an actual mic'd cab especially when compared to current amp modelers.

Lopp, I inquired about the iso cab in a previous post and I've never actually had any first hand use with this cab although it looks very cool.I'd like to mention the one in the auction for under $200.00 actually comes with a jaguar speaker.I'm not saying anything bad about the jaguar speaker but I'd probably go with the iso cab that has a celestion in it.:D
 
If you pop the cover open, you can definitely get the room ambiance as well... it performs like any other separate cab. It can sound beefy or thin depending on the amp settings and the guitar used.

Heh. I wasn't too sure if it was a joke, but I found it amusing that if you take the cover off an isolation cabinet, it gets the room ambiance. It amused me not only because it seemed obvious, but also because taking the cover off defeats the purpose of the iso cabinet. Eh. It loses some of the humor when explained. :rolleyes:

Ok, I figured out a better way to ask:

How does it compare to a mic'd 4x12, open back 1X12, and open/closed back 2x12 with similar speakers? Do you find that there aren't any noticeable differences? For example, does close mic'ing a 4x12 eliminate the effects of the cabinet and the other speakers so that the Iso Cab gives effectively the same tone?
