ram vs cpu for plugins?

It also helps if you bounce the drum tracks to audio and then disable DFH. Using the files dosen't take up nearly as much ram as the VSTi.

I recommend checking out the Studio Build forum and learning more about egg cartons for acoustics. They're basically worthless and a fire hazard.

(I grew up about 30 minutes east of you)

Cheers,

Oh I have heard it 20x over, don't worry ;). We didn't have recording in mind when building the room. All we wanted to achieve was keeping most of the sound in the room as to not bother the rest of the house. The room is fully insulated, sheet rocked, ceiling tiled, carpeted, and egg carton'ed. How much do the egg cartons help? Probably not much. But for now we are happy with the sound; you can only hear the bass upstairs.

When we start recording then we will see if its a huge problem. I am aware that the best way to set up a room for recording is to basically have a room within a room that is acoustically treated with $100 bills :p.

So in conclusion I do understand they're flammable, and don't do much acoustically. If we ever pick up smoking, or some more money, and want to record at a professional level, we will treat the room properly. That or the place will burn down; whichever comes first. I usually learn the hard way anyway :D

Cheers!

LOL, that's usually the way it goes.... :)

Fortunately, treating your room for acoustics (not isolation) is not too expensive. If you are a DIY'er, which from the egg cartons I see that you are, then you can probably treat your room nicely for less than $200. Some OC703 or equivalent and some cheap fabric from walmart, some spray-on adhesive and a few other little things and you're good to go.

Good luck and have fun.

We're located in a hidden secret layer in the state of CT. We whore ourselves all over the internet though; you can find us on www.ProjectHellCow.com, as well as facebook, myspace, and twitter! :D

Which video have you seen, and what do you think?

I was just in CT. last week running live sound with a band called "Remember September" they were on the local TV channel 3 on a show call "Better Connecticut" they have a song that they use for their thyme song. It was a great show and everyone at the station was great.
I got very good response from the in house engineers with a lot of complements.
I can't remember which vid of PHC that I had seen.

Well if we go the acoustic treatment way, we would go balls out. Wouldn't we need bass traps as well? If i can get a figure on the total cost for proper (or as close to proper) acoustic treatment I might actually go ahead and replace the egg cartons you all love! We'll make it a video and feature it on our website to boot :D But that's a whole new thread... so, time to do some research!

Back on topic... upgrade the ram and disable useless background services. Let me know if you need help with that :)

It's always recommended to use a separate physical drive for your streaming audio. Your O/S and DAW on one drive, your audio files on another.

So for instance lets say i record a guitar track ...

can i record it straight to my external hard drive....

or record it to my hardrive and then move to the ext. hard drive after and insert back into my working file?

Would this improve perfromance?

Can i even set reaper up to record to me ext. hard drive?

There's gotta be a song in there somehow!!! :D And you can use OC703 for bass traps. 4 to 6 inch thick straddling the corners.

The idea is to not hinder the data stream going to the read/write heads on the hard drive. If you're using one drive, then your computer is going to access it for routine processes while you're streaming to it. If you're recording with high sample rates, multiple tracks, etc, or, if your hard drive is not very fast, the interruptions could cause dropouts, clicks, skips, or whatevers.

I have not used external hard drives myself, but have read about others here who do. Invariably, they use firewire for the external drive. I have two physical drives in my computer, the O/S and DAW's on one drive and my audio folders on the other.

I would think you can set up Reaper to stream to where ever you choose, like an external firewire drive. That should work well.

frick.

mines usb. not firewire?

that will make a difference eh.
