RAM upgrade?

ok, nutha quick newbie question.
right now i'm running 4GB RAM on a T6600 processor (2.2GHz/2MB cache). everything runs pretty smooth for my purposes, but i occasionally get some low pops and clicks, especially with 5 or more simultaneous ins.
i'm considering upgrading to 8GB RAM. will this make a difference in terms of multitracking capacity/quality if i don't also upgrade to a faster processor?
 
I don't think so, It probably has more to do with the interface and the sample size.

What interface are you using and how is it connected. What software are you using? what sample size are you using?
 
motu 8pre, 1394FW 6-pin to 4-pin into Reaper.
sorry to be ignorant, but is sample size the same as bit depth? if so, it's 24.

Yeah, Thats the one I was talking about 512 should be fine, I've recorded 8 at a time with 512 and it was fine.

Is there a lot of other stuff running in the background?

I don't know anything about reaper so I can't help you there. Does reaper have some sort of performance meter to monitor the cpu usage?
 
Ram will not have much impact on recording ins as these should stream straigh to disk

Getting a separate HDD for dedicated recording would normally increase performance.

If you can only have one Drive that has to serve as both system and recording drive thencheck out www.blackviper.com for system tweaks you can make to ensure there are not too many background processes trying to make calls on the HDD while you are recording that will hinder performance

I wouldn't recommend pushing the sample buffer too high for recording as it will introduce recording latency (which may or may not be a problem depending on how the DAW compensates for latency)
Also if you are recording at a really high sample rate like 192k samples at 24 bit cut the sample rate down to 96k samples 24 bit this will still be more than enough samples to satisfy Nhyqhuist theory and give you more frequency capture capability than your mics or ears can hear but will cut down on the amount of data being streamed to disk and make like easier on the disk when you record
