I'm thinking about ditching my Soundcraft console and going with a more portable rackmount unit. I don't use a whole lot of mics so the pres aren't very important.

So the alesis 12R studio is what I'm leaning toward right now. Are there any other mixers that are so compact? (3U)

Don't worry about the # of "U"s.

My A&H 10U mixer fits into a water-proof typewriter-sized form using the SKB popup case.

Right now I'm using an E12. I haven't really been playing as a band for awhile and now all I need is a simple mixer that fits in my 12U case, that only has 3 or 4 rack units to spare. I don't want a separate mixer outside of the case, and I don't want to buy a new case that fits a normal mixer. The Alesis is looking real good at this point in time.

Soundcraft makes rack ears for your E12 that will turn it into a rack mount mixer that only occupies 9U. This will leave you 3Us for other gear. Just a thought unless you're not happy with the E12 sound.

And to expand on that. even if you have to buy another rack for $100.00 to $150.00 you are still going to be way ahead considering the loss you will take on the e12. Not to mention the downgrade in quality (IMHO).

You'll be sorry later:D

Actually I'll most likely be making money on the Soundcraft cuz I bought it for so little. (WAY below the typical store/musiciansfriend price).

As for the Alesis mixer, it's decent. I'm not really using it for the Mic preamps, but rather just for an electric guitar, two computer inputs, keyboard, and a bass input. I can also get it for about the same price I would sell it for if I were to not like it.

Just wondering if there are any other mixers that are like the Alesis.

The only thing I see that's even close is made by yamaha. Who at least used to make some decent mixers. Haven't owned any of the newer stuff.

There's a mv800 and mv1000. the alesis looks like it has an easier to use layout, but who knows. I personaly have had not very good luck with rack gear from them I.E.: eq,s , effects units.
On the other hand I has a Quadrasynth plus synthasizer that was very nice.

any way here's a link to yamaha.
