So you CAN mount a CD/ROM, CDRW, whatever, in a vertical position? I had no idea.
Yep. A year ago or so, I bought my wife a Sony Viao. The Cd in it is vertical. My first thought was, hmmm, thats odd, what keeps it in place? It has those clips I spoke of.

Shortly after that I bought my kids a Compaq. It can lay flat, or be placed in a stand to hold it in the vertical position. Again, there were the clips. It's not proprietary to Sony,or Compaq, as I have seen it on many other makes and models.

Even without the clips they stay in. Just hold them while the door shuts. we have many servers at work turned sideways and do that. Another solution is to get a cdrom drive that has an input like a car stereo. Just slip it in and it accepts it. Those are cool, though I can't recall seeing one in a number of years. Many rackmount cases have bays that are horizontal due to the nature of gravity.

I found the site i was thinking of:

www.marathoncomputer.com

there is also an ad with pictures on page 176 in this month's MIX magazine.

Not cheap, though - system for horizontal mounting of a G4 is $200 list.

I got a 2U case off Ebay. But it's too deep for what I want to do. I want to put it in a portable rack. It has the powersupply. I'd probably sell it for $100. Think I paid more like $125-150. It's an ATX type. And boy is it sturdy. This thing is made for keeps.

I just happened to look at my CD tray on my G4, and guess what? It does have those little clips after all! I never noticed them before!

Am I a total nimrod or what?!!! :D

Well now that you mention it....nah, too easy. :D

Actually this has been very informative. Thank you (to all).

Hey Lou!

Can you believe the over-under on the Pats this year is only 8 1/2 games??? Talk about no respect!

If you're heading out to Vegas anytime soon, let me know - I'd love to throw a couple of hundred down on the over.

Yeah, I heard Sports Illustrated picked 'em 3rd in the division! They're looking pretty good to me. Guess it's gonna take two to prove it. :p

I took my PC tower, laid it on its side and mounted it in a rack drawer so not only is it rack mounted but it pulls out on roller bearings for easy access. As far as noise goes, it's no more noisey than the HD24. Oh, and the CD writer has the little "tits" to hold discs. This had me going at first too. When I saw the tits, it was an epiphany.

i am in the process of converting my setup over to rackmount. i attached a pic so you can see it. the little 10" monitor is for when i record other bands where they jam. its a little job i am going to start doing on the side.

wow, thats a pretty cool idea. thanks kristian. i wonder how much that goes for. considering the flat panels are like $300, gotta be more than that because of the keyboard, mouse, and drawer. i gave them a call and they were closed.7am. gotta call later. thought maybe i could get a quicker response here.
anyone have any idea?

I know this is an old thread but had to chime in. Here's where I got my computer case, looks like the same one spacedye has in his rack. Comes in black or white, I have been very pleased with mine. AND only $99. These were the best deal I found.

Chris,

The only thing about that one is you will have to buy a power supply for it. The aberdeen one has a PS with it. But that one looks pretty good. Either one I don't think you can go wrong.

gatorhaus- yep, thats the same one, and im very happy with the case. but follow the link for an updated photo.

oh, and that locking keyboard drawer has been ditched.
i am now using wireless and infra-red keyboard and mouse and used that space for another delta 1010. there is also a furman pl-plus on top of the POD PRO.

Looks good spacedye,

How do you like the POD pro? I love my wireless, optical mouse!
No balls to clean:D :D :D

:D :D :D
LOL!!!!! (no balls to clean...) but the batteries in the mouse always seem to go bad at the wrong time for me.

i love the pod pro. i think the presets go a bit overboard at times, but overall, it makes recording alot easier and can give some really great tones. other than the presets, the price is still quite a bit high, but i picked this one up on ebay for, i think like $340. so i got a great deal.
so, how did you make out with the case? did you order it yet?

I want to put my computer in my rack too. It's just a simple 10U desktop rack (Quiklok RS10) so I don't want the case sticking out 20'' to the back.
The last couple of weeks I've been working on a design to put a computer in a 4U high, 10'' deep case, while taking cooling and sound levels into account and I hope to start building it somewhere this spring.
When there is something to show you all, I'll definately will.

I've been looking at rackmount cases a little too. My favorite at the moment is the Maxtop IPC-4032AL cause its silver....ooooh. I also like the Evercase ECR9400B. The Maxtop is $95 with no PSU and the Evercase is $120 with a 300W PSU. Those prices are from www.newegg.com - they have nice pictures too. The thing that sucks is all these cheaper rackmount cases only have 3 5.25" bays which means either CDRW/CDROM/HD or CDRW/HD/HD for me. I guess if you got a big enough hard drive it wouldn't matter, but 4 spaces would be nice.
