how would i go about racking a firewire drive securely? i'd like to be able to travel with a cd burner and hard drive mounted in a 1U rack. anyone got ideas? are there special enclosures?

If the drive itself is the same shape as an IDE drive, then what you could do it get a drive that 'slides' into a slot.... something like

That would mean that you could insert a new drive as and when you needed it.
I like the idea though. it's a pity you can't use IDE parts instead of Firwire... Firewire is so annoying.

There are 1u rack shelves that you can screw anything too. You can also get 1U rack face plates to hide it or blow air on it. Check out Anvil or SKB. They have lots of accessories.

My harddrives don't have screw holes and the cases are made of plastic. How would I go about mounting these to a rack shelf? There has to be something more secure than glue.... I'm suprised no one else would be interested in having a portable cd burner/hard drive solution.

I'd look into a rackmount CPU case and go SCSI - run your P.A. outs into an ART DI/O into a SPDIF capable soundcard (Echo stuff, any SB with LiveDrive interface, M_Audiophile, there's a ton) and into your favorite DAW software (for the cheap people, there's N-Tracks) - you can just fire it up at the beginning of the show and let it run - no under-runs on that kind of speed....

actually, i'm quite happy with my set up. i have a firewire hard drive and cd burner. all i want to know is the best way to mount them onto a rack shelf or into a particular enclosure. if no one knows the answer, thanks anyways.

I would say that there aren't any specific casings for what you need.
If your Hard disk and Cdr were Normal ones (that fit in a PC casing) then that wouldn't be a problem.
as firedrive hard disks come in various shapes and sizes, then i'd rcommend attaching fittings to the drive, and screwing them to a standard rack tray.

Take your drive down to Ace hardware and see what will work. You could use some wire to strap it down, double sided tape, brackets that will grab it and screw into the shelf. Just be creative.
Check out different rack accessories. They know people need to rack weird sized stuff and they have different adapters and brackets but they usually arent cheap.
