Rack toms: clips or stands?

So lots of people say don't use clips in the studio, but some of these same people also praise the Sennheiser e604s, which use clips.....

Is there that much of a difference? really?

I would say don't use clips, use stands. A LOT more stable that clips and a LOT more versatile - you don't always want your mics 1" off the skins!

You can use e604's without clips, I use them on stands all the time

I think the reason I don't like the clips is there is a lot of structure born sound traveling into the mic from the shells and rims and it seems to color the sound in ways I don't like.

A lot noisier too.

that's what I've found too..

I'm a sample hound so I use clips because I don't particularly give a damn. That being said, I get some good sounds without the samples on there. I love a close mic'd tom.
