So, what if i just built a rack space out of 2x4's and screwed the componets in.. would this work? just like a frame...

its a live setup.. so once its in.. its going to stay in..

and is it from the flange to flange that its 19" or is it.. just the size of the unit..

also how tall is 1 unit?

1 RU = 1.75"

the distance between the inside of the 2x4's should be 19 1/8". This will give you the necessary 19" once the rack rails are installed.

I'd recommend making a box for your stuff, a frame only sounds a bit sketchy to me (risk of falling over?).

On the last rack I built, I recessed the rails about an inch. This way if the unit falls over, none of the knobs or switches will get damaged.

Yup, you can screw straight into the wood no problem. But you can only really do it once, so you'd better be sure you're leaving each unit where it is.

I would just buy some rack rail and mount it to your 2x4s. It's pretty inexpensive and will afford you the luxury of moving stuff around if you need to. I know you're saying that once its in its in, but hey, shit happens. I'm actually planning on doing this (rack rails and 2x4s) since I'm not overly concerned with the aesthetics of my setup at this point. Utility will work just fine right now.

just drop $20 on a pair of rails (e-bay)... youll probably wish you had at some point down the line, so might as well do it now
