I was looking into some gear today that was rack mount and I though I should get a case. My sound card will also have a rack mount interface. Then I though I could just build a rack mount computer and put it in the case and everything would be more portable. The only problem I'm seeing is with the monitor. Is this a bad idea? Any comments?

I believe you can buy monitors that are designed to work in rack mount situations. I will have to find the link. I was looking at doing that myself. I noticed some people use flat screens. Let me search for the link.

I seen one of those from PriceWatch.com, but it was over $800. Didn't think it was really worth it.

Now, you know why I left the idea alone.

It is a nice idea, but one I could afford to do without...

if you're going rackmount, why not just get a small lcd monitor and make a mount out of whatever you want? small lcds are not all that heavy. easy to transport, too.

I can't believe how much they're still screwing people for a $20 keyboard, and a $300 dollar monitor in a stupid pullout drawer. I am in the wrong business. Even the ones without the onboard KVM (which you wouldn't really need for DAW use) is damn expensive.

I'd pay $500 for it, no more.

The only problem with a rackmount case is that most PS's for them sound like you're taking off in a 747.

I haven't seen "quiet" PS's for them.

Also check out dawbox.com. I think they sell the silent cases as well as fully configured units.

i was talking to a coworker who is in our IT dept about rackmount pc cases and he said the real drawback to rackmount pc's is that are VERY long so you have to get a rackcase deep enough to hold them. i have been wanting to get a rackmount case for a while but have decided to hold off because of cost.

That's an old AT case. Think if I got one of those 2" LCDs for car theaters, I could smash it into the case, or is there something important right there that I couldn't cut the case and install it?

hey guys.i just ordered a rackmount pc case for $84 including shipping. they have them at newegg.com do a search for "maxtop rackmount"

Hope you noticed that it doesnt come with the power supply! And they dont give anyinfo about the fans. Did you ask them?

The case are usualy put on big cooled server rooms or similar place, and they dont care about the noise.

Anyway, good luck dude, hope it will be ok :)

The 4U ones aren't too bad, and the one I saw at Newegg.com actually seems like it will fit in a regular music rack.

The shorter they are, the deeper they usually are, it seems. The 1U is short, but it is way deep, and won't fit in a standard SKB style rack.

your right it doesnt come with a power supply but even after you add that in,its still cheaper than most.its a 4u and comes with 2 fans.when i was first building it with the case top off,i was kinda concerned with the noise but once i put the top back on,it was more quiet than my regular pc.newegg has i think 3 to choose from $69,$89, and i forget the other price.

I got the Maxtop case from newegg as well (I spent a little more to get the silver version though). Anyway, as far as the noise issue goes....

The case doesn't come with a power supply, but you can use any standard atx power supply. I'm using an Antec True380 which is a very good psu (don't underestimate the importance of a good power supply) and it is VERY quiet. The case comes with 3 fans - 1 large 120mm in the front and 2 80mm fans than hang in the case. I took out the two 80mm fans and replaced the 120mm case fan with a quiet one from Enermax (this is still not that quiet, but you can adjust the speed). I have a Zalman flower fan on my CPU. The fan on my video card (MSI Ti4200) is the loudest fan in my setup and that's supposed to be one of the quieter ones. Everything is staying plenty cool and pretty quiet. Actually, I'm most unhappy with the HD noise from my Seagate Barracuda, which is actually quite loud when accessing even though its supposed to be one of the quietest HDs. I'm going to look into one of those silent drive enclosures.
