Rack gear

not if you want to track with some effects like compression. Also, some effects like reverb sound better as outboard gear.

I was watching a U2 live in Chicago Vertigo TV special on today, so why is a guy like the Edge have a million dollar rack behind him and then he's using a Boss pedal here, this pedal there? What do artist's racks of his status consist of? Is there somewhere to find out without being completely mislead? The more I learn the less I understand...Seriously. This applies to many areas of my life. SERIOUSLY!

My suggestion echos what many have said - make sure your mics, pres, and converters are decent first. Then get some GOOD plug ins.

After that, explore some outboard gear. I think if you took a poll, most people probably do not track with any effects, with the exception of some comp./limiting as a safety net against overs. Those who do use anything else likely have a significant amount of experience to know ahead of time what the mix is going to need. If you need them later for mixing, then you will need many pieces of gear ($$$) and good converters.

Learn how to use plug-ins really well. When your ears start to tell you where the plugs fall short (don't use crappy plugs, they all fall short), then it may be time to get out of the box.

For myself, it would take a lot of cash to buy the hardware to replace my UAD-1 card. Not practical for the foreseeable future.

I didn't say track with reverb. And i'm talking about if someone has good mic pres, mics, etc. The only outboard stuff i'm buying since I have plug ins already are dynamic processors EQ and reverb later on.

what EQ do you think I should get if I get one..parametric or graphic? graphic EQs seem a little too complex for me.

Other way around....parametrics are more complicated than graphics, but much more usefull for recording.

oh.

Know of any good parametric EQs that are pretty cheap? How is the behringer tube one? I forget the name of it exactly. I've also seen a presonus one that's 1/3 rack size.

Lol

be careful.....its an expensive addiction. soon you'll be paying money for rack gear that doesn't even DO anything to the sound.

Lol no kidding I'm already at this point :)
