hey guys,

well this is my first song post here, although i've been reading and listening to some of the stuff that's already here....and i'm feeling outclassed alread :P.

anyways, so this is my FIRST EVER attempt at recording anything. i got my fostex VF80 yesterday afternoon (*WOOHOO*) and this was the first song i recorded.

as this is my first recording and i know...nothing about recording, i thought i wouldnt mess around with the EQ yet until i get an idea of what i should be doing.

everything was recorded with an SM58 (only mic i have while i'm waiting for the others to arrive). everything that you hear was plugged straight into the recorder, including the (home made!) slide guitar. sorry for the bad vocals, but its the mic that makes me sound flat, i swear, it really does....NOT

so tell me what you think,

cheers,

MD

as a first recording, this is great. With some mixing polish, this could be pretty nice. reverb on the voice, a stereo ac gtr would be nice, some echo/reverb on the slide....etc. So...are you going to be the next Erland where people can pile drums, bass, keyboards and all that stuff on top of your songs:eek:

welcome to the cruel world of posting mp3's!!

just be thankful you don't have drums or the drum Nazi's will ooze from the woodwork.

watch the sloppyness with the 2nd vocal.

I noticed that the song was quite large for a < 4minute mp3. That could cause some problems when streaming...

I liked your recording and congrats on the new gear. The vocals sound kinda behind the guitar and need to be brought up a bit but for a first try it all sounded pretty good.

When you can save some bucks you might want to look at getting a new mic and preamp. You can get a StudioProjects B1 and an AudioBuddy for well under 200 bucks and those would make a huge difference in your recordings.

Keep having fun !!!

What?!?! No drums?!?!

well hell... then I'm not listening... where's the fun if there's no drums to belligerently scrutinize?

;)

:p

:D

I'll check it oat when I get home. :p

Another good first recording. I just posted my first recording as well, and I'm starting to become embarassed by all the other good recordings I'm hearing, including first-time recordings such as yours.

My only comment would be that the vocal sounds a bit dry. Perhaps you should add a bit of reverb and see what that does.

thanx!

ok, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment on my stuff - i really appreciate it.

mismkr ---> actually i do have quite a large kit at my house snare, 4 toms(2 tom-toms, 2 floor toms) 6 cymbals, but i can't play them for my life as its my bro who plays the drums and me the guitar. but i dont think i have the equipment. i was thinking about this and had a question to ask - if, when i have enough mics, i wanted to record the drum with quite a few mics, could i plug them into a mixer, and then pluf them into my VF80? because the VF80 can only record 2 tracks simultaneously, i'd lay down one track with all the drums on it. this would mean the drums would hafta be perfectly balanced with themselves BEFORE recording them right?

rustyfingers---> i'm actually waiting for a SP B3 to come, but the pre-amp will have to wait a 'lil while - i'm on a student budget :( yea like you i also noticed that it was real big in size of the length of MP3. how could i cut that down without loosing to much more quality , as i think with my current set-up i'm loosing quite a bit. here's my setup: Fostex VF80---->line-in on crap soundcard-----> crap sound recorder---->encnded from .wav to MP3 with RazorLame. i'm takin the sound from the headphone out of the VF80.

so i'm gonna go and try to mix this song keeping in mind what you guys have said...Quite So Openly v 1.01 will be hitting a store near you soon!!

cheers,

MD

MD

right..

don't rule out just a couple mics too for the kit, if your brother is a wizz drummer. kick/snare/oh or two...

I agree this is a nice job. Nice mix of guitars. Musically decent song as well. The lyrics didn't do much for me, but I liked the tune and guitars.

There were a few spots with some pitchiness, and some vocal syncs issues here and there. Small mic pop at about 3:10.

Welcome to the board. Hope you post some more.

Trip.

as promised

so here is the new version of QSO...i've EQ'ed it, pan and applyed some effects....all of which (bar the pan) was quite hard to do, esp on the VF80. i also re-recorded the backing vox, cuz the original one was embarassing. so tell me wat you think. the vocals may be a bit too present and maybe has a lil too much reverb. i find the acoustic has a bigger sound now which is nice, but i'm still not happy about it's EQ. can anyone give me some hints on this?what would be the best way to point the mic at the guitar?? (its an SM58)

i have a question about bouncing: what does it do, and why would i want to do it??

cheers,

MD

Nice

This is great for a first effort (or my 1000th).

Really enjoyed the slide guitar! Nice.

Heard some vocal dynamic transients (some sibilance and spl peaks for bs and p's).

the second vocal track is a little out of synch at spots

Just listened again on the near fields - boy I like that slide guitar - the vocal transients are VERY apparent.

Good luck.

Great potential with this song.Your a little flat in some of the vox.Slide is excellent!I Demand a REDO.Little less verb on the vox, too.Good vibe...

Wow great job for yor first recording!
New gears great,isn't it!
Don't forget to go to work though!:D

Even with 58's,(which sound pretty good btw,)the vocals and writing make the song shine.
I liked the homemade slide too, almost sounds like a Hawaiian guitar.

Sounds like you need some coolaborators,I hear a bass, drums, harmonica, ect.
Plenty of talent around here!;)

Great job,looking foward to more!

Pete
