quick question

i know that this is a really really dumb question but to help solve an argument can someone tell me when bands record their songs if they all record together at the same time or if they put the tracks down by seperatly?

if someone can prove this for me that would be great
 
When I recorded with a 4 piece band they recorded us all together first with everything miced or DI'd. While we did that our guitar guy just played rhythm thru out the song then went back and added his lead track.
 
Again, both. They may be recording in seperate rooms monitoring on headphones or even doing overdubs later but I couldn't tell you what the exact ratio is. I believe most woud do sessions with overdubs to fix weak parts or add vocals. Most would probably start playing all together.

So...both.

Just keep your money, it's a stupid bet.

... the answer definitely is both. however, if i had to gander a guess at the most popular modus operandi for a four piece band it would probably include rhythm tracks (bass and drums) recorded to scratch vocals and guitar, then track guitars, and then track vocals. at the very least, i would say that there are probably a majority of folks who don't track vocals live. there are, of course, exceptions to this (i'm actually one of them). the answer could be virtually any combination of tracking schemes one could think of (and some one probably couldn't).
