I bought a US-428 off of ebay and had problems with it not working. The problems included:
1. Input audio is extremely distorted.
2. No output (including direct monitoring).
3. Trim knobs would not affect the incoming signal.
I have posted on the Tascam forums to try and get it to work, but nothing has helped.
I tried 3 different driver versions, cubase VST, cubase SX, albeton live, audacity, and cool edit pro. The only thing it would do is sync up the controls with cubase and record the distorted audio.
Anyway, I sent it back to the seller and he said that the unit works fine after he tested it again.
But my question is: No matter if the unit is working properly with the computer or not the trim knobs should adjust the incoming signal right? And by turning up the track fader, master, and pushing "Input monitoring" (?) you should be able to direct monitor, yes?

i had a 428 and was able to direct monitor just as you described. i had problems with the unit until i upgraded to the winXP SP1 because the original release had a USB bug that caused problems with recording and playback.

i was using it with Cakewalk Sonar.

after that it was fine.

also remember that the 428 does not have phantom power so any mics that need phantom power need an external power source.

i sold it on ebay, but now i regret it because my younger brother is starting to get into recording and i could have passed it to him. i just gave him my old Alesis Monitor Ones.

Okay thanks, so the unit is screwed up. Yes, my windows is updated and I was using a dynamic mic.

#1. You need to check your phantom power/your signal chain.
#2. You need to make sure that if you have your speakers coming out of the output on the 428 that you change your setting in the program to make the output the 428
#3. Make sure you have the latest drivers.

You just need to make sure that you have all of your ins and outs in the software set up to the 428. And also in windows you need to make sure that you have the 428 set up as your sound card .

Yes, I checked all of those suggestions before. Thanks for the help but as of a week ago I sent the unit back and got a refund.
