questions on the DELTA 66 sound card and breakout box...

I'm a newbie on this site, so understand my "curiosities."

Anyways, I wanted to ask about the DELTA 66 (soundcards and breakout box).. Will that alone and a decent mic of course be effective in better sound quality/recording?

okay.. so I'm going to ge the delta 66.. I'm assuming I should also get a "pre-amp" ?... anyways, any thing recommended that is price-worthy.. ? I already got a shursm58 so I'm good with the mic..

anyways, anything else that I should get for my studio setup? any recommendation or comments is greatly appreciated...

Unless you plan on using the SPDIF on the 66, don't get it, buy the 44, 4 analog I/Os. I'm not sure what you want to spend, but with that I'd get a Soundcraft M4 mixer, 4 channel with direct outs and 4 stereo returns for a total of 12 channels. That would be a pretty nice set up into say something like the Cubase studio in a box deal they have now for like $299. After that, maybe a better stand alone pre, mic, outboard reverb, compressor etc.

Like I said, I really don't know much about your situation so if you can explain a little more, like budget, what your needs are as far as mixing, channel capacity etc. that would be a great help and you would probably get more replies.

It looks like I left out monitors, sorry, you'll want to invest some money into some decent monitors at an earlier stage. I've seen people get really discouraged with their home set-up because they were trying to start recording with headphones and were having a terrible time getting things to sound decent.

Well.. my brother uses his setup for production. He told me that I'll have to get other things, which he doesn't necessarily need or uses.

So here I am... I own a Nippon NP-820 and a Shure SM-58.. I guess those are good mics.. Bro told me to get a Delta 66, which will give me a better sound and I can connect my mic into their. Then he told me, I'll need a pre-amp.. That's all he told me about.. How about the OMNI STUDIO w/ the DELTA 66 ? .. is that a decent setup?

and about the monitors.. Yeah, I'm still in high school so it's hard for me to work at getting some things, especially when school's in session. BTW, my basic needs are for vocal recording. Basically, pop in a CD with some instrumentals I get from others, convert it to a .wav file and place it in CEP or whatever program I'm using.. Then from there, I just want my voice to sound decent quality..

Cheap mixer - Yamaha MG10/2. Giveaway and very very good for the money (superior to Behringer equivalents for the same money).

You might wanna look at a cheap condenser mic such as the Studio Projects B1, for £60 British it's a giveaway.

Don't worry about monitors, plug into your hifi or do it with headphones - buy a set of Harvey's MoreMe headphones for like $20 so you don't get a whole load of leak from your CD coming out your phones and onto your vocal track.
 
m-audio omni i/o studio with the delta66 soundcard...

any opinions ? comments ?
 
not used it but anything that gets bundled cheap with something else is worth being a little sceptical of. i think you'd be better off getting an Audio Buddy if you're using dynamics, or the cheap mixer I said if you want phantom power and / or a good piece of gear on the cheap.

the mixer is only £75 here so it can't be much more than the omnibox there.
 
Wells, I decided to be stubborn and get the OMNI I/O STUDIO w/ the Delta 66, in result of personal references.. I'm definitely sure the Delta66 will do fine.. Hoping that the "award winning" and "10/10" OMNI preamps will do fine..

anyways... in case I wanted to record my guitar or synthesizer.. any information on how i can do that?

... oh gyea.. what else should I get to continue my setup?

Well the omni front end seems a funny choice to me but hey.

the deltas are all good cards, i have the delta 44 myself which is the same but i chose not to pay extra for the SPDIF interface i'd never use.

for guitars - mic them up and record as you would vocals.

synths output at line level (hence 'line out') so you don't necessarily plug them into the mic pres. i can't remember off the top of my head what the omni has in the way of inputs but you'd be fine plugging a keyboard straight into the soundcard (make sure you set the input level to 'line' in the delta control software).
 
ahhh thanks... Omni I/O Studio funy choice ? hahah.. Hmm.. I really hope it'll help me out... From personal references, i just decided to go ahead and purchase the product.. but I guess there's always EBAY if I decide I don't like it.. or refund.. any other equipment I can work with, guys ? From what i undrstand you will only be recording vocals from pre made instrumentals. Heres my oppinion...

If you already have the Omnistudio, (which is what i originally thought...)I think you'll be absolutely fine with it. Its a decent all in one solution. You only need a compressor and whatever effects, be it hard ware or software. Youll prolly have more ins and outs than you'll need, but who knows, you may get into beatmaking later on.You have room to grow.

I have had no complaints about the pres on the omni but If you do decide to get a stand alone pre. maybe go with the delta66 with the regular breakout box($299)and save $130 or maybe an Echo Mia and save even more. ..But now you will want a mixer to deal with signal routing. Most mixers have pres built in, but if you are on a budget and cant afford to fit montiors into your budget I doubt youre gonna get a mixer with pres much better than those in the omnistudio.

Just make sure you get monitors of some kind even if its a temporary cheap set. Headphones will only result in uncecessary wear on your eardrums.
 
Yeps, I will be recording from already made instrumentals.. Only applying my own vocals.

The Delta66 w/ the Omnistudio was so highly recommended, it just decided to go with it... I haven't got it in tha mail yet, so I'll update you guys with how I much or little it's effective. Onto the compressor; what's that and what for? I got the effects down from plugins and CEPro.. As far as beatmaking goes, I'm really into making productions.. I can hear it in my head, but I never got the chance to understand HOW to make one.. My next investment would like to go into a synthesizer..

"pres on the omni.." Define "pres," please. Well, I'm wondering.. wouldn't monitors effect my vocals ? for example, the instrumental hitting the microphone? Isn't that the point of headphones? good explanation, please mr. ;)

About getting monitors.. I will be thinking about that.. At least I can play my mp3s on a betta level.. KTR8s is good, right?

Delta with omnithing is fine, but it wouldn't be my choice when you could have had a DMP3 for probably very similar money. Compressors essentially 'even out' the dynamics of your vocal, as in boosting the lows and cutting the highs, kinda. do a search for threads on it and you'll get loadsa useful stuff.

my thing with the omni is, why when you have a great card do you wanna lock yourself into one preamp? the converters on the deltas are mint but your recording chain is always as bad as your worst bit.

use monitors for everything other than tracking. so record with yr phones on, then get those mothers off your head and play it back out of your speakers. then do your editing, cutting, effects etc.

incidentally, most people won't use compression whilst recording but re-send the vocal back out, thru the compressor and back in. or just use software plug-ins which are pretty good anyway.
 
So I asked my brother about the Omni Studio not being my best preamp and etc... he agreed but just thought that it would've did a really good job, especially when I got the package down to $300. He told me that the Delta costed a little less than that so just get it, and I can go ahead and fix me another mixer(which has preamps installed in it?)...

Welps... compressor.. not necessary? haha.. I guess I can find me plugins and use CEPro for that :-)...

Lastly, about monitors... So I only use em to hear the track? ahh.. is it supposed to pick up the slightest flaws of a track or something? Anyway, any suggestions? I heard ktr8s is a good monitor...

yeah don't use your mons for tracking because at best you'll get a slightly out of time copy of your backing track stuck in with your vocals, and at best you'll blow your ears and speakers with a cracking feedback loop.

compression is quite often necessary but don't do it as you're recording because you can't change it afterwards. send your vocal track back thru your compressor and record it to a new track. that way you still have the original if you still need to change things.
