questions on THD hotplate

im thinking of investing in one of these so i can record thorough my 100watt Head and 4x12s. what is everybodys thoughts on this? Is it great for amps that are to loud for recording and small gigs as well? what are everyones thoughts on always having this on to get that tube sound everyone loves? any cons? (besides the $300 price tag- is it bad to buy it used?)

The Hot Plate is great! However, if you want great tones at a very low volume it changes the sound too much.
The best is to set it to "Load", run trough a speaker simulator(Like Hughes&Kettner Red Box) . It works great!
No problem buying it used, it`s very well buildt.

so if i wanted it to give me that cranked Mesa tube sound i would need to get a speaker simulator and set the THC to load?

I thought the point to of the THC was to get that high volume tube sound at a low volume?

i cant just hook it up to my 4x12s?

I have one and like it.

I've only used it to reduce the volume while still playing through the speaker (and micing it, if I'm recording). That's what it's really for, I think. When I tried taking the line out, I didn't like it much, so I haven't bothered with it. If I want to record "silent / all electronic" (i.e. without a speaker and a mic at all), I'd use a simulator like a Pod or J-Station, rather than using the amp at all, I think.
 
so i dont need a red box if im micing the speakers right?

how do you feel about using this thing live and in practice for getting a good pushed tube sound???
 
do you think id get better sound quality out of the iso box or the THD?

im using Mesa Rec Dual 3 channel in to 4x12s
 
Without comparing it`s pretty hard to tell, but I guess the iso box will be the best.
The Line 6 amps sound pretty good at low volumes, better than most tube amps. They really suck loud though.....
