Hey all!

I´m soon going to start recording on my computer and that´s why I have some questions.

1. Is this a good interface for my computer? http://www.thomann.de/index.html?partner_id=97926&page=fi/alesis_multimix_16_usb_20.htm

2. Can I hook up some monitors too? and do I plug them into the interface or the back of computer?

3. Do I need a better soundcard? I now only have the motherboards own

4. Can I run EZ-drummer along also?

5. And how about latency?

My computer speccs are:
Intel Q6600 (quad core)
4GB Mushkin RAM
Gigabyte EP45-DS3P motherboard
ATI radeon HD4870 (not important info :P )
Vista 32bit version

I´m a Metal/rock head so that´s what I will be recording

So please inform me and link if you can to stuff that I might need.

Thank you for answers :)

1. yes

2. interface

3. yes...forget 1. and buy a multi channel audio interface, then disable you're on board soundcard

4. yes, if you host it in a sequencer like sonar or cubase as a VSTi, or if you purchase toontrack solo then you can run it as a standalone application

your PC is well spec'd and will handle just about anything you throw at it

Ok so I can use that interface I linked (I live in Finland so nearest online shop is www.thomann.de)

So you think I should get a new and better soundcard for the computer?
What brand/model should I go for?

And what kind of Monitors should I also buy, what brand do you recomend?

Is there anything else I should be aware of or buy?

Thanks for answers!

Im not sure you need a mixer unless you are recording a band, or multi channels at once..if not just get an audio interface with a few inputs (and phantom power for a mic)...something like a Line6 UX2 would probably do..but there are bigger and better just more $$$

This becomes your "soundcard" so you don't have to worry about that

as for monitors it really depends what your budget is..Id try to get second hand (which may be limited where you are) but there are a wealth out there..just depends how much cash you've got

Id stay away from Behri monitors...I like some of their gear but they certainly don't excel here...maybe Yamaha or Roket

Aware of? well Im fairly new at what I do but the results are getting there..Id say read up on anything you are going to buy...reviews, user reviews..Harmony Central's a good place for user reviews...don't be fooled by gear snobbery, you can always upgrade if you feel you need to..ask questions..and read..imho of course

Guerilla Home Recording by Karl Coyat's a great read to help set you up (so is that tweakheadz link)..ask questions here..no matter how trivial and participate in the MP3 clinic forum...you'll learn loads

oh and welcome :)

Hi and welcome.

I would suggest doing a search on these forums. There is LOT of very useful information. Also check out www.studio-central.com. Lots of good stuff on that forum, too. And a must read is www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm

Search, Read, Study, search, study...you'll find your answers.

And once you get get an audio interface it replaces your soundcard.

Ok, I´ve been thinking for a while now and I think I´m going with these:

1. http://www.thomann.de/index.html?partner_id=97926&page=fi/alesis_multimix_8_usb_20.htm - Alesis 8 channel usb 2.0

2. http://www.thomann.de/index.html?partner_id=97926&page=fi/alesis_m1_active_620.htm - Alesis M1 active 620 monitors

Was thinking that 16 channels Alesis was overkill anyway.

Anything else I need for starting to record that you recomend?
I´ve been looking through those links you gave me, Will study them a bit more :)

Thnx for the help!

Cheers

you need to sort out what it is you are going to be recording first. How many inputs do you require to record seperate instruments on at the same time? If the answer is 2, vocal & say acoustic guitar then you would be better served with a 2 channel interface with phantom power up to the value of what you'll spend on the Alesis multimix. What you are getting there is 4 so-so mic pre's but if you only need 2 then you are wasting money. I'd get the best 2 input device money could by within my budget, IF 2 inputs was enough to cover all my bases.
