Question

Ok..

This is what I have..

A pc, with alot of recording programs/plugins.. cubase/cooledit/fruity.. all that jazz...the pc has some form of soundblaster in it.. with only the normal ins and outs...

also have a set of top of the line shure drum mics for micing drums, some sm57s and 58s for various stuff, instruments etc... a 48 channel mackie board....Some monitors to mix on, and several pairs of studio headphones. I also have various condenser mics for vocal apps and such.

Here's what I need to do...

Effectively.. record my 5 piece band. The main thing is drums.. I need to be able to track each mic on the drums on a seperate track. What can I get thats not very expensive.. that will do this effectively?

I have the red mr8 box.. but i don't think that will do much good trying to record drums.

you can get a Presonus Firepod which is what i have. it allows you to record up to 8 channels at the same time assuming your computer is up to it. it has 8 mic preamps on it. i think it's pretty good considering the price.

Just how many pieces of software do you have??

basically if works like this:

sound source - mic -cord- pre -cord- interface -cord- computer - software -cord- interface -cord- monitors/headphones

Sounds like all you need is an interface - something that'll handle up to 8 simultaneous tracks like the Firepod, the Delta 1010 or the Echo Layla. Look around for interfaces.

Remember that a signal chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. It's gonna suck to have quality amps, mics, pres, interface and software if you're using cheapo cords, or a cheapo room, or a cheapo anything. Buy the best you can get, and when you can, upgrade your weakest link, than the next, then the next...

Yeah none of my software is pirated.

I have Cubase, Cool Edit and N-track, Fruit Loops, and some plugins. I purchased them all. Theres certain advantages over buying programs, than stealing them. Either of the first 3 is fine for what I intend to do.. They all pretty much allow me to do the same thing.. which is record. They all have different features, and different learning curves but for the most part.. the outcome is the same. A recording program is the least of my worries, as its the least important part of getting a good sound from the source. Its so funny all my buddies are like.. get Pro Tools!

I'm like... uh.. pro tools = cool edit pro.. without the interface. Its just a piece of software...

I believe so. I was checking out ebay.. I can get the digi 001 which is an older version, but I believe would be good for what we need for 150-200 bucks.
