...
ladies and gentlemen,,

a while ago i had a post asking about adat pres,,,and eventually with great advice, i settled upon a presonus d8 (which i have not bought as of yet)

i have a digi 003, and as many of you may know, i can have 8 channels via adat, and four channels via line ins 5-8.

with this in mind i've been considering an rme quadmic instead,

the problem is,,,4 channels of RME clock in slightly dearer than 8 channels of presonus.

the question is,,,,,is it a justifiable price jump, when taking the quality into account.

i dont care about other features....im looking very simply at adding preamps with gain knobs,,full stop :)

thanks all.

Instead of buying a pre-amp with optical outputs, ill go with an Alesis AI3 interface, this is an optical to analog, analog to optical converter, this way you can add whatever pre-amps you want and also you'll have more outputs if you desire. It may be hard to find it because it has been discontinued, but check on e-bay i bought mine there.

ok,thank you for your answer, and i appreciate your point,

but assuming i have the money for only one or t'other,

are four channels of rme analogue 'worth' the same as 8 channels of presonus over digital?

basically,if i buy the rme unit,,,and find it sounds the same as my old firepod,,

i'll be damn disappointed,,,cos i got four channels for the price of 8,you know???

thanks again.

Well i havent heard the RME pre-amps but im very confident in their products, what i do know is that presonus cheap pre's are not that good, so lets say that if i should act by the book ill go for the RME's the only thing is that youll be wasting 4 adat channels, but if you dont need those extra channels i dont see any problem.

thanks for replying again,

sorry ,i've probably been unclear,,,but

the RME has line outs and would occupy my line ins (5-8) on the digi

the presonus option would use my adat connection.

i know they are two different things, but basically i want to add at least four channels for now, on this sort of budget.

you've probably answered my question tho by saying "presonus cheap pre's are not that good",,

that probably explains why you get 8,plus convertors,,,,for the price of 4 analog out rme pres :)

Ohh ok, then i'd go with the RME, one of the limitations of the ADAT protocol is that its maximum sample rate is 48KHz./24bits, it may go over that by reducing channel capacity but its not the standard. So if you want to record at a higher sample rate lets say 96KHz. the pre-sonus wont do good.

ok,thanks for that,

personally i record at 48/24, but by the sounds of things,,the RME is the way forward.

any backup from owners/users?

thanks.
