Hey guys so I had a question for you all...currently I'm recording through a Presonus Firestudio Project and I have a big project coming up in a few months...I'm striving to get to best vocals within my budget and I was wondering if it would be worth getting the preamp that I linked below and use that instead of the built-in preamp in the Firestudio Project. Would I hear much of a difference to warrant the $200? I know $200, although the reviews are good, is on the low end for mic pre's which is really why I am asking because that's all I can afford to spend so if it's not worth it then I'll pass on it.

What do you guys think? Here is the preamp Electro-Harmonix 12AY7 Tube Microphone Preamp | Musician's Friend

Thanks so much!

Nico

I think you are more likely to gain audible benefit by turning your attention to your microphones.

What are you currently using?

+1 for mic pre's making minor differences, at least when you're trading from one modest quality level to another, and what is your setup?
..And just to throw some more perspective in.. nil compared to the impacts of source quality, mic placement, room sound etc.

mics im using are...Rode nt2a, blue spark, oktava mk-012's, sm57s, e609, mxl9000s...i have a great acoustically treated room and high quality cables. I don't have it in my budget for a new microphone so i suppose my question would be pertaining towards the current mics i listed.

Nico Zottos,

If you want to look at preamps with "character", then research the Golden Age Project Pre73 or the Warm Audio WA12. These are both discrete solid state designs, with transformer input and output. However, each of these will cost double your $200 for a single channel.

I can not say whether either of these will meet your needs, but both are well regarded and there are plenty of reviews.

What kind of vocals are you recording?

Thanks for the advice. I'm recording folky vocals....sort of like the lumineers or Mumford and sons.

Hey Nico-

A friend of mine had that pre and he all but through it away! Very, Very noisey and added very little to what he had hope to be a tube pre.
I can't believe that they still are selling that unit.

Thanks for that info, moresound. I think ill cut it off my list for now and save up for a higher quality one that will make a difference.
