Question on portastudio inserts

Since I've only ever worked with portastudios (analog or digital) and DAWs I'm going to ask a very dumb question.

When playing back on a portastudio, do the inserts on the mixer work? For instance; if I record a stereo drum track to tracks 1&2 can I then, when mixing, add compression, or distortion, or any of those effects that have to happen "in line?" I hope that makes sense and isn't too stupid. Thanks for any help you can give.

Which model?

I'm assuming yes, but to be sure it would be good to know which model to answer for certain.

For an example, the 488mkII INSERT jacks are in between the EQ section and channel fader, so yes those would be available when tracking or mixing down.
