I will be getting the HD24 soon. And was wondering if the unit would enable or recognize just 16 tracks plugged into it at a time without any harm to the unit? Reason being I only have a 16 channel board at the time. And it will take some time saving to accommodate a decent 24x8.During the wait I would like to use my new HD24 as a 16 without troubles. Can this be done?

No problem at all. What's your board btw?

Even if you're recording on only 16 tracks, you can still use the remaining 8 for copying over to (for editing purposes) later.

The HD24 is a really nice machine. I've had about 3 instances of glitches occuring during editing, otherwise, it's flawless.

I just read a 2002 article from the Sound on Sound magazine.Article states, based on track minutes not to waste HD space.I can set the number of tracks on a per-song basis to two,4,8,12,16 or 24.Sounds like I wont be hurting the machine at all.And saving hard disk space in the process.
My existing board is a clean Tascam M520 which I've used for 16-18 years now. Thanks for the heads up!

Don't forget to get the Fireport if you plan on transfering tracks to a computer and back; it is worth the investment.

This is correct. When you create a new song, you must select the number of tracks you want that song to use. If you were to select 24, but only used 16, you'd have 8 tracks worth of wav files taking up valuable space on your drive.

Absolutely.
