I'd go along with that. I do it invisibly and it's not harder just takes a bit more time. Other than that some of his repairs are a bit too visible for my taste, but it's hard to tell without having the piece in front of you. Does he have a workshop near you? He only has email as contact.
If he has a workshop and insurance etc I guess he would be more than qualified to do the work you are looking for.

Yeah he has a workshop, pretty much the only one in the city. He set-up all Paul Bradys Lowdens (do you know of Paul Brady?) I'm assuming if he runs a workshop insurance is pretty mandatory yeah?

I have met Paul Brady a few times at back of stage at festivals and the likes, I wouldn't say I know him though. Brilliant and underrated songwriter and seems like an easy going guy.

as long as the duncan is operating in its "stacked humbucker" configuration, there should be no hum. if you split (tap) the coils so that it functions like a single coil, there will be hum.
the short answer is that you will almost ALWAYS hear hum/noise from single coil pickups. that's why they invented humbuckers. they buck the hum.
something to keep in mind about the stacked humbuckers, though, is that they don't sound at all like single coils. they sound like humbuckers. while that's great if you want the humbucker sound, you lose the single coil nature of the guitar.....and IMO the traditional tele sound is all about single coils.
(actually, they don't sound quite like humbuckers, either, given the closeness of the windings, but that's splitting hairs

Looking at the SD website, the vintage Tele stack is 15K and the lead is 18K. No wonder they don't sound like single coils. That doesn't mean somebody can't do a stacked humbucker at 7.5K or so.

well that 'splains it.
i had a little '59 in my tele bridge for years, but never really liked it much. i swapped it out for that 5/2. i have a jb jr in my strat's bridge (with a fralin blender pot in the 2nd tone location). i love it. that fralin blender is REALLY killer. i can dial in just a tad bit of the neck pickup into the "all bridge" position to smooth it out just a little bit. tweaker's delight.

bill lawrence replacements in my strat did a great job in killing the noise. Barely noticeable, and the pickups sound great.
The body cavity is not shielded, but the 9official fender) replacement pickguard i added at the same time is (has foil all along the cavity area anyway.
Best of all, very consitent volume in all switch positions. Great upgrade for that quitar that cost me only eabout $75 used on ebay.

I would think it would sound like a single coil. I'm the weirdo who hand-wound a humbucker to 5.6K ohms, and I like the sound of it . . . most people would want more output, but the gain knob works fine for me.

While we're on the subject of hum and pickups, I was playing my Nashville deluxe earlier. It's another Tele with an extra pickup and a five way pickup selector. Position 2 and 4 are out of phase and this makes things really quiet. Is this as good as a 'bucker? I should have pointed out that I've never owned a humbucker equipped guitar.

Technically, no, the closer the coils are together (and more identical) the better the hum cancellation. But practically, any hum reduction is better than none. Maybe the out of phase position is -20dB on the hum, and a humbucker is say -40dB, but if -20dB is enough, there you go.

I can't think why it would. It wouldn't have as much output, but then single coils don't usually have as much output as a humbucker. I tend to find excessively hot humbuckers to sound "thiner" than ones wound to vintage specs of about 7.5K-9.5K. They loose a lot of midrange when they get overwound. Which is what some people want, of course, but they sound thin to me.

Yes, it is. I suppose there is some difference in the RF being picked up by the two pickups, but not enough for an audible difference. Of bigger concern is that the two pickups are not the same size/output/resistance/etc., but you'd be hard pressed to convince me it was enough of an issue to matter. I suppose there might be a measurable difference in hum canceling, but I doubt it.

I might just do taht with my 3-way Tele. I could still keep all the functionality of the bridge and neck as well.

It's not just wiring them backwards. The other pickup needs to be reverse-wind/reverse-polarity for it to work, so you would need to get a replacement for at least one of your pickups. That being said, I've done that for some customers with P-90s and it worked great.
