Question For The 388 Owners About Tape

I was wondering, the guy who gave me my 388 also gave me 4 reels of unused quantegy 456, which sounds great to my ears considering I haven't tried 457 yet. I've read a few places that since the 456 is thicker, it's more of a strain on the machine. Is there any truth to this? And is there an easy way to tell what thickness the machine is biased (??) for? Also, other than the fact that 457 is thinner and with a longer record time, is there any difference sonically between the 456 and 457 that anyone has noticed?

Tascam service recomends the 457 only.He claims the thicker tape put strain on the motors

There should be no sonic difference between 456 and 457.
