Question for RE20 users

Hi, I bought a used RE20 a while back. It seems to have really low output compared with other similar dynamic mics (like my Beyer M88). It also has a slight crackle going on, at least I think the crackle is in the mic - not the pre.

Should the output of the RE20 be really low? The thing is unusable at the moment because I get too much noise if I give it enough gain.

I'd hate to think I got screwed, but is this what an RE20 sounds like? If not, anyone use EV for factory service? Should I try to find someone other than EV?

Hate to say it, but it sounds like you got screwed.

Send it back to EV for repair. Shouldn't be more than $100. EV is a pretty cool company about doing repairs.

I agree. The output should not be so low. And I'd imagine EV would best know how to repair theit own product.

Well at least I got a deal on it. It was like $250 with the shockmout. If it costs me $100 to fix it, I'm in for $350 working as it should.

I've bought about a dozen used mics, this is the first time I got bent over. I can live with it. :o

Got a mint, almost-new Beyer M160 for $300 to balance out the bad RE20. :)
 
It is worth getting fixed, that is for sure, my RE27 get used on lots of stuff, used to be my kick mic (replaced with a beta52), still gets used on bass cab, guitar cab, and is absolutely great on vocals, especially for a big voice-of-god sound.

I also am a big fan of the RE20/27 and SM7 large diameter mics for taming bad rooms.

You're saying that the output is low. Compared to what? Compared to an SM57/58 or similar microphone, the output is much lower. I have an old RE20 and it is about the same level out as my SM7's and my Sennheiser 441. They are all a lot lower than 57/58's. Usually I've found that the dynamics with flatter response have lower gain.

What are you using for a preamp? You need atleast 60-70dB of gain.
