A month or two back, someone posted a link to a MP3 featuring guitar recorded via a digital or ss amp. I'm pretty sure it was in the context of one of those tube vs POD/SS/DIG debates (perhaps SN-8 started it). Was it you? If yes, could you direct me to the MP3? If it wasn't you, sorry for bothering ya.

All I know is that I was mightily impressed with the playing on it and meant to download it at the time - now I can't find it.:(

I think it was S8-N's "First MP3 in....." in the MP3 forum or somethin' like that.

How 'bout that playing?

Yea, I posted that link in reference to micing vs. direct, but, it also is a nice example of getting good tone with a (gasp!) Crate amp, which some thought all sucked. As I said then, it's subjective of course if you actually dig the tone, but I love it...I don't think the crate and peavey bashers bothered dowloading it . :) ....it's one talented dude, he recorded it himself too using cakewalk, and micing the amp (a Crate DSP 80) hybrid tube I think, with a SM-57. Great playing too.

Equipment issues aside......

Hats off to him - he's obviously got chops but didn't splatter it all over the 5 minutes plus. That suggests maturity, taste and a recognition that the listener is number one. We could all learn from that.

Good point. Lots of chop-laden guitarists could learn from realizing the listener is number one. As opposed to playing just to show off how cool they are.

Elco,

I just did a gig on Saturday for a guy playing a Crate. (I run a sound company in Louisiana) I had a cancellation and got a last minute pickup for a small local band. The guitar player was only like 17. I was already in a bad mood, because I had lost a good paying gig in Florida.

Anyway, I was about to give up before soundcheck, and then he cranked up... Man it sounded good. I was really surprised. Actually I deserved a good punch in the stomach for being so aloof and judgemental. I'm just glad I didn't stick my foot in my mouth before I gave him a listen. :-)

I agree also. Saw a band over the weekend. In this act it was the drummer that just couldn't contain himself! He was quite good; accurate, great timing, creative chops, but jeeeeez! Every tune was just another 3min chop for this guy!

Well I sorta agree...you know, I've listened to some jazz recordings that were 10 minutes of mind numbing scattershot licks, riffs and notes all over the map. It was improvising, but there was a melody in there some where I think. Anyway, it seems like nobody ever accuses jazz players of 'overplaying' or not making the listener number one or using poor taste. They just say, wow, those dudes can blow! lol Greg Howe is a guy who just rips on every tune, but it all sounds good to me. Maybe you have to take into account the genre of music. Howe playing the same stuff in radio rock or a Neil Young song probly would then be called overkill and tastless, I dunno.

Yeah, but Miles Davis came along and showed that jazz could also be subtle and economical.

But speed is not a bad thing. Like anything else, it has its place.

That reminds me. I got free tix to Nsync and went for the hell of it. The show was pretty good, but became excellent when they introduced Mr. Howe on axe and he ripped out a quick solo. He definitely knows how to play in the context of a song.

I was wonderin' what was up with the new looks.

Happy 250+ to BBB and getuhgrip (no offense getuhgrip, but BBB looks better). ;)
