I currently have a piece of shit computer with a Soundblaster Live and a Shure SM58 mic...

I am going to buy a new computer..Not sure which one yet, But i was going to buy the Studio Products B1 mic with the presonus tube...I was wondering if i should buy a better soundcard..Now i got a family and shit so its gotta be reasonable price...Any advice?

Do you think my new setup will give me better quality?..Im using cool edit...

i have no experience with a pre amp..so i think the presonus should be user freindly enuff without getting too complicated...

thanks in advance

FYI, i will not be recording instruments only my voice..genre - hip hop.

I'm currently using B1's. I'd go with a Studio Projects VTB1 preamp. It's extremely quiet -- sounds great -- offers the option of dialing in a tube.

Also, there's a British magazine called "Computer Music" that just came out with an issue totally dedicated to setting up a computer for audio...

I know nothing about setting up a PC for recording, other than the fact that now is a great time to be building a PC. Prices are dropping through the roof. If it was me, I'd set one up just for audio recording, nothing else.

I'm assuming you mean the Blue Tube? I hear it's pretty terrible from a number of sources on this BBS, so you might wanna think about looking for something else. Might I suggest the DMP3? It's pretty much everyone's favorite budget stereo mic preamp. Some have gotten it from Guitar Center for $130, though it normally goes for $200.

That goes hand and hand with the Audiophile ($150).

That's pretty much what everyone suggests for bare bones around here.

I agree with Chris Fallen. The Audiophile is the best value out there for recording audio. It will be a major upgrade from the Soundblaster Live. However, if I were you I'd keep the Live card and run it next to the Audiophile and use the Live card for MIDI and soundfonts. It's a very powerful card for this application.

Although Computer Music magazine is a useful resource, I find it woefully lacking when it comes to any actual recording advice or familiararity with the semi-pro recording gear that is available on the market. It was not long ago, if my memory doesn't fail me, that this mag gave the SB Live Platinum like a 9/10 for a computer recording card. Gimme a break.

I second the idea of getting either the Studio Projects Vtb-1 or the M-audio DMP3. Either will get you a really nice sound with the B-1.
