To the few who are advocating theft of product or services as a defensible position:

Which part of the word THEFT do you not understand?

G.

I think I'm a little fuzzy on the TH at the beginning. Oh wait, I get it now! :D

hmmmm, I don't even know where to begin...How about the student goes to the library where they have the software? Yeah, they may have to stay late at school, or miss the basketball game (or homecoming dance), but that's what it takes to succeed. When I was in college, not everyone had a PC (back in the 90s), or if they did, they didn't have internet access. So what did we do? We went to the library, or a Computer lab to get our work done.

I work in Software, so I know why software is expensive. I'll give you a hint - It has NOTHING to do with the cost of the CD-ROM/Box/Manual.

you americans don't understand... schools close at about 4. after that time all the rooms are locked, only the specialist music rooms will have music programs. kids here can't use the school computers very often after school finishes. just cos ur country has more money than sense doesn't mean we do. the student version of sibelius by the way is completely useless past amateur composition. u can only create 8 staves at one time i think, so nobody can write music for any type of band or orchestra. i think british people have a very different view on all of this than americans. most studio engineers i know often used cracked versions of software

Do British people consider THEFT acceptable?

G.

There are few things that a man can actually possess. One of them is integrity.

You truly sound like an angry young man. My advice to you is to channel that into your music composition instead of stealing.

I wasn't referring to the "Student Edition" of Sibelius (which is only $79 US). I was speaking of the full version of Sibelius 3, which is available to students at $229, still less than the cost of many textbooks.

From their recent representation around here, apparently so.

Regardless of nationality, I would not want to do business with persons so lacking in personal integrity. All I hear are lame rationalizations, and if it is so easy to them to rationalize this sort of behavior, then how hard would it be for them to rationalize other nefarious behaviors?

Like this one?

BUGGERY - Sodomy. The detestable crime of having commerce contrary to the order of nature by mankind with mankind, or with brute beasts, or by womankind with brute beasts (i.e. the 'pony-shows' allegedly formerly? available in Tijiuana or Baltimore's 'Block'), or by mankind with womankind through anal intercourse [aka 'pumping the poop-chute,' 'entering the back door,' 'going down the dirt road,' 'butt bumping,' 'ass-f**king,' etc. - Note: These are generally not considered proper or acceptable legal terms and therefore it may be wise to avoid their inclusion in most formal court filings whenever possible.]

Depending on the specifics, this often was, and can still be, a highly penal (and usually penile) offense.

The origins of the term are unclear but, according to the Library's Head Librarian's research, may derive from supposed, all-but-forgotten, religious sexual intercourse rituals involving humans and insects [aka 'bugs' - hence the term] allegedly practiced and/or encouraged by some rather peculiar early Catholic Popes and other church officials. Despite no evidence that such practices continue to the present, this has not yet been substantiated or denied by reliable church sources, a fact our Head Librarian considers highly suspicious.

Also see: sodomy, bestiality.

Guys like Stravinsky and Varese started out before the advent of the steam powered DAW. I believe the cold chisel and stone tablet was the preferred method of notation.

where the hell do you buy your text books? over here a normal student text book will cost the equivalent of about...$40

and to be honest. we obviously dnt care as much about this as you, as nobody in this country has been fined for downloading illegally

say if i were a music artist (which i am), i'm more bothered about the reviews i get about my music than how much money it makes. the more my music gets around, the better

No we fuckin don't! I can't say we particularly appreciate having to pay twice as much as Americans for gear either ... but that doesn't mean I steal microphones rather than save up.

How recent do you want? I think I'm the most high profile Brit on this forum.

Well, I was referring more to graduate level courses where textbooks can run in the $300 range (new). However, I've taken literature courses where 4 or 5 books were required, totalling in the hundreds of dollars for a course.

I don't think it's about getting fined. Stealing is wrong, whether you get caught or not.

Well, professional school, then. These get pricey:

I bought some pretty expensive books in business school also. However, your argument is still flimsy. Price is not the issue. The issue is one of intellectual property, copyright and, most of all, principle.

Theft

The two software I use for my music creation belongs to the company I work for. I made them buy Sony Vegas 5 DVD and Fruity Loops 5. My company is aware I brought them home so I can finish some work over there. I want to say it before anyone assume I "stole" them and get piss for it.

And Clonebuddy, no one force you to listen to their music (unless you open the radio). Also, Fruity Loops is a very fun and easy software to use. I mainly use it to compose the drum so my drummer can listen to my compositions and learn the songs. I also heard some very impressive stuff done with it. So why don't you cut the crap....

I've spent hours and hours over here to go through threads. And I see very often this debate over piracy, theft and all this... What's the point? You people carry on your shoulders the weight to educate people about how good you feel when you purchase everything?

I've been using Vegas for a while now for some job I could have done in anything smaller. When Vegas 1 got out I downoaded a cracked version, at that time I wasn't doing much with it. But then when it was time to do some serious work, I made my company buy it because I felt confortable with this one. Now I would like to make them buy Nuendo 3, but there's no way they will fork 2000$ over a software they aren't sure will do the work and that I'll be able (and know) how to use. There's no demo, what should I do? Make my computer at risk and try a cracked version?

Face it, serious content creator will buy the software. It's useless to tell a kid to buy a software he basicaly don't know how to use and don't even know he might really need it or not, why should he fork from 100$ to 1000$ for it? It's just a matter of time before they buy it, or leave it.

I know people who work at softwares programming, and most of them don't care much about piracy, they make money out of serious people, like companies and studios. Most people who use cracked version would have never bought it in the first place, so it's not as if they were loosing money over it. Some others who use cracked version will eventually buy it, make the company they work for buy it or just not use it anymore.

And the argument I see here : Piracy bring the software prices higher is bullshit. They set the price according to the market, the competition and the target users and according to what they think will sell. There's no way a 1000$ and up software is intended to target the "kids" market. So if kids "steal" it, it's surely at their own advantage in a near future. If studios steal it, now their own reputation is at risk. No support and if something goes wrong with the cracked version, they look like fools.

Serious softwares creators found ways to make their softwares very difficult to crack. It's part of the game I guess. Or it's like getting a Ferrari with no alarm system in it. I'm not on the theifs side, far from it. But I say, if you don't want to loose your money, don't put it on a table right in middle of the street, you know someone will eventually take it. Thinking piracy will end is uthopia.

It might be sad, but if you could download a real Ferrari over the internet, everyone will want to at least try it once. You can't really compare theft of software and theft of hardware. That would be just plain stupid and out of today's reality.

Personnaly I would like everyone to buy the softwares they use, but it's not realistic. I assume that over here everyone who ask question (stupid or not) bought the software they are requesting help over.

Anyway, since when the purpose of this forum is to point fingers at potential cracked software users? What's your fucking point? Do you guys plan to enforce the law on your own? If you guys could spend that energy in somethinig positive, you might get your point across without shitting on the newbies who ask potentially stupid questions? I'm sure you guys can find some Anti-Piracy forums where you can all brag about how much money you forked this year over overpriced softwares and how magnificent you feel when you do so.

I'm very happy to share this forum with professionnals, but don't forget that the name of this forum is HOME RECORDING and not PROFESSIONNAL RECORDING FOR PEOPLE WHO BUY EVERYTHING THEY USE OR TRY.

Another post that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever...

It's EXACTLY the same - Software vs. Hardware. If it's okay to just use a cracked version of (SoundForge?) then by your logic, it's okay to just waltz into BestBuy and steal it - Or is it suddenly wrong just because it's in a box...?

Are you living under a rock? You surely know it doesn't have the same implications. You're repeating yourself over and over. You completely miss the points. Everywhere I see this debate, your name pops up. You really love to talk about this don't you? Why don't you spend your precious time mastering some stuff instead of loosing your time over this?

Stealing a physical objet in a store is a lot more risk. If they catch you on the spot, you will be procecuted.
Downloading on the net is (for now) almost anonymous and almost impossible to enforce at large scale. Sometimes some get pinched but it's mainly to make exemples to scare people out. And I hope it work!

Until they completely enforce the piracies laws, it's not about to disapear. I'm not saying it's ok to use cracked software, I'm not saying it's not theft. I'm saying it's a twin blade knife. Piracy can be as profitable to software developpers, it bring them business in the end or they would just stop doing it. A developpers who doesn't admit that only sees the negative sides of things.

When you develop software, you must know piracy exist, you make softare for the amount of people who will buy it. Saying it's theft or not won't change anything to reality even if it's a sad one.

It's exactly the same thing for downloading music. Today there's a massive amount of bands that wouldn't have never seen the light of day without music piracy. People can't buy everything. If piracy wouldn't exist those bands could never make money out of concerts, t-shirt and all derived products. We live in a world of over consumption.

I red your website's information on mastering, very interesting. For an amateur like me I always like to learn more, why don't you use your knowledge to help people wich is the purpose of this forum, help or be helped, instead of bashing on every crackhead you suspect as if you were a godamn police.

Do you know anything about 5.1 surround mastering? I might be one of your client eventualy. I've posted a song on the mp3 clinic, can you give me some advices on it?
