Is it any good? I see that it seels for around the same as an sm-57, and looks just like one, but chrome, with an on and off switch.

Yeah, it's a good mic... some people would say that they're better than an SM-57 because it has a smoother top end, and were very well made. I believe all of the Shure 545SD-LC Unidyne mics were made in the U.S. too; the current SM-57's are made in Mexico, and aren't as consistant as they used to be.

wonderful mic, great on cah
bs, toms, snare and sometimes vox

Do you mean a brand new thing or an old one?

I have an old one and it's a bit of a gem for some cabs, snares and vocals. None of the high-end hype you want for pop, but I've done jazz and blues vocals that are schweeet on mine. With one of them and a Beyer Soundstar MkII you have a pair of old, cheap dynamics that can be as good as anything else out there, at any price point. :)

Shure 545sd

I am sure it is an old one and I don't think you could still get one. I own one and they were a lot cheaper than the 58, but I though it was a little harsh.

It's a (very close) predecessor of the SM57, and its cousin the 565SD is a (very close) predecessor of the SM58.

I've never used the 545, but you can sometimes pick the 565 up on eBay as cheap as $25-35. It's a pretty sweet mic for live miking, IMHO. It seems slightly brighter and a good bit hotter than the SM58, but I could be imagining things (or it could just be that the SM58s I've worked with were heavily abused pieces of crap). They're very similar in terms of the response curve.

I used to use them for miking our Jazz band back in high school. That, two 57s, and a 58. The 57s had lame output. The 58 was decent. The 565 cut through like a knife.

They do do a brand new version, I think. I've seen it in trade catalogues at work .... I think. :o

i've got 3x 545's. 2 were made in Mexico and 1 was made in the US. the US one, without a doubt, sounds better.....but all 3 of them sound better than the modern 57s i've used.

they're good mics for the money--i like them better than 57s, but that's a personal preference.

FWIW, the Full Compass catalog does seem to list "new" ones.

cheers,
wade

I was talking about the old ones... I've got three of them that I bought in the early 70's, and I prefer them for mic'ing guitar cabs over an SM57 because they sound much smoother and less brttle/shrill on the top end to my ears. They were all U.S.-made, and are mirror-clones of one another in sound and output.
