The room matters. Just like being cold or hot or hungry or stuffed will affect your ability / willingness to work. Having a room that adds noise / distractions, even if you don't record in that room, will distract you from what you're trying to do. Even with headphones, those distraction can be a bit much. Even the headphones are a bit of a distraction. Modern day head vise and ear sauna. Was that bird outside, or part of your mix? Did the guitar player drop something, or did the ice maker drop some fresh ice? Was it that windy, or did someone leave the A/C on while tracking? Is that crickets, or is the fan on my laptop about to die? Things that are just a lot easier to identify if you're not distracted, or it simply couldn't be something else.
