question about remixing

i have a question. my band recorded a cd and had it mixed by the same guy. i now live 330 miles away and have wanted to play around with the tracks and possibly remix or do some editing. what do i need to do this? i don't have any equipment to plug anything into. i just have my machine and the cd. i had a version of protools once and was going to try this but it kept telling me i didn't have anything set up. i just need the screen with the various tracks so i can play around and fix it the way i wanted it to be in the beginning. any suggestions? email me at samuel.j.stine@gmail.com
 
pro tools is proprietary to digidesign hardware.

you cant just have a copy. the hardware has to be plugged into it..........

how's that for minimalizing on piracy.. go ahead, download it! still cant use it.

That means Samuel probably downloaded a copy of Pro tools...:D
 
no, i bought a copy. (used) but i lived in an apartment and really had no need/room for a major setup of equipment.
 
Ableton live is an awesome software for remixing. I love the tempo set features on it...

If someone sold you a copy of pro tools with no hardware then you got suckered. It only works with digi hardware connected. BTW do you have the actual data cd or just a cd with your music like a commercial cd? If you don't have your sessions saved then you won't be able to play with the individual tracks(drums, vox, gtrs etc...).
 
a burned copy of my cd. is there software i can use to edit the protools files? (or something to convert the protools format to so i can use different editing software?

what can i do with the data files as far as conversion and editing?

i can call the engineer and try to get the data files. but unless i can get them converted or buy the mbox and protools le, they are useless to me. (but then i have an excuse to get the software)
 
Just have him put the individual WAV files onto a data CD.

Import the wav files into your software and mix them yourself.
 
i forgot about PT free.

you might be able to use that.. i think it's the equivalent of like 5.0 or something though..

i would just grab the individual waves from the audio folder within the project, and the hell with the project file. the probability it being a version that you can open with anything is slim.

I think I read something somewhere about Pro Tools free having to be run on Windows98. I'm not sure most people are going to want to downgrade that far down for a program that even now is considered crippled.
