Question about POD

Does the POD send a balanced signal to the mixing board?

I'm wondering if should I go POD > DI Box> Board, or can I go from POD> Board. We seem to get a hum in the speakers when we connect the POD.

Yup. The POD puts out a balanced signal from its output jacks which are TRS. It's not at line level apparently, although I've not had any problems running it into the mic pres on any desk I've used it with.

Are your guitar cables screened? I ask because I've never had a hum problem with my (or any of the other) PODs I've used - live or studio.

Also, is your guitar single coil? This can often be susceptible to picking up all manner of electromagnetic nastiness.

No, not necessarily.........

The POD Pro puts out either balanced or unbalanced signals (your choice)......... but the bean POD is unbalanced only.....

You don't need a DI box between the POD and the board, unless you're trying to connect it to a mic input..... (it should be connected to a line input)

The POD Pro lets you choose your gain structure (-10dBV or +4 dBu) but the bean POD is at -10........ (gain structure and balanced/unbalanced connections are 2 seperate beasts..........)
 
the bean pod puts out left and right signals.. wouldnt the two of them together via a two mono -> stereo cable be a balanced signal?
 
No.... a balanced configuration requires the same signal carried on the 2 conductors but 180 degrees out of polarity. The inputs at the receiving end then re-sum the signal back in-polarity... any extraneous noise that may have been induced into the signal is then cancelled out.

This is NOT the same AT ALL as a stereo signal converted to mono and being fed thru a 2-conductor cable, which is what you described..........

Sorry, Bear, don't want to disagree with you, but the (kidney) PODs manual states that the jack outs are TRS and can function as balanced or unbalanced, depending on the leads used.

I hadn't noticed about the different gain structures before, though.
 
I stand corrected about the bean POD output... that must've changed..... because I bought the POD Pro simply because of the gain structure and balanced configuration options!

Shadowfax - what I told you about the difference between stereo summed mono and balanced configuration is absolutely correct though...........
 
Don't know if it's changed, Bear. Mine is from the first shipment which arrived in the UK, and the manual states the jacks are TRS and deliver a balanced output.

Like I said, though, I'm not too sure on the gain structure issue - I've been led to believe that the kidney only delivers semi-pro line levels. Suppose I should RTFM... ;)
 
Nope....Its had balanced outs from the start.

The differances between the pro and the bean is

The POD Pro is 24 Bit, has digital S/PDIF and AES/EBU outs, as well as XLR and re-amping outputs.
The POD 2.0 is 20 bit and does not have those outputs.

Aw, go on. Make me believe it. Why should different cables result in either -10 or +4? Rubbish, right?
 
With the pod pro having the digital
output, is the noise level significantly
reduced? i have the reg pod 2.0 and
it seems a little noisy and the clean sounds have more hiss than i would like
if the digital output eliminates this i will def . upgrade. ....thanx...Bostonfan2
 
The digital output may be a bit cleaner due to one less stage of D/A but the internal sheilding and higher resolution internal processing will likely sound alot cleaner.

I had the original POD and I never knew it was balanced, in fact I could swear that it was unbalanced stereo outs.:confused:
