Question about my mic

I just got a tascam 414 and I plugged my guitar right into it and recorded some stuff just fine. Then I bought a nady sp-5 mic for about 20 bucks, plugged it in to test it out, and everything I record is so faint I can barely hear it, no matter what I do. Is it something wrong with the mic? I'm just learning to put together songs so I don't care if it doesn't sound too great but I do need to be able to hear it. Thanks

What kind of mic is an SP5 and what cables are you using to connect it to what input on the 414?

It's a dynamic mic so it doesn't need phantom power. If you're plugging it into a line level input, that could be your problem as a mic needs to be amplified.

I'm plugging it into the mic/line in jack on track 1. It wouldn't surprise me if it needed amplification, but where the manual is just showing you how to record and all that step by step, it acts like you just plug the mic right in. I've been playing guitar forever, but i've never owned a mic or recorder before, so what kind of amplification, if any, do I need?

a mic pre-amp would be what you need....most mics will need one

If it's a mic/line input there must be a trim control associated with it...

Yes, there is a trim control, but I've messed with it, and every other knob. Think maybe my trim control is broken? Tonight after work I'm really going to sit down and research/mess with it even more until it works or I know how to make it work, if its the last thing I do. I'm amazed to find people who actually attempt to help the clueless, thats rare for the internet. Thanks

Try another channel, you might have a bad pre.

Some dynamic mics do not have a lot of output.

When I plug in my 441 the trim is cranked all the way to the right on any mixer I've ever owned. The 421 requires somewhat less.

It must be right though, I've never had any gain staging problems
using it or doing it this way.

It's nice that it's consistant from console to console.

Well, I guess I'm going to go on ebay and get a shure sm-58, I figure I can't go wrong. Maybe I can sell this nady back for about the same price I bought it for, I'll advertise it as a new high-tech mic for those with really sensitive hearing. Thanks everyone. If I ever get any whole songs done I'll post em.
