Question About Mixing

Hi

Iam am looking into getting a HD recorder and I was wondering after I have recorded all the tracks, could hook up the workstation to my computer via USB and use some of the plugins that I have on my system ie, vocal pitch correction how would I do that if possible, would I be able to transfer all the individual tracks onto the computer and mix that way Im a newbie I know but I need to know this

Sure. With a light pipe sound card for example (or other, 8 tracks/per ADAT cable in/out in this case), you transfer the tracks to the computer.
Consider that you can also just get converters and/or sound cards and record directly to the pc, skip the HDR altogether.

i think the easiest way would be pull the hard drive out and plug it in the pc and dump the wav files usb would take ages to transfer audio files firewire would work but to me putting up a hot swappable caddy in your computer would be the best way for file dumping

Which recorder does that? The Alesis HD24, for example, writes to disk in a proprietary format, so you can't simply pop the drive into a computer and read it -- you need to use the Fireport (which amounts to the same thing as swapping it via caddy).............

the fostex does as well as the tascam infact there is a spread on this device in eq mags all the time. and the alesis fire port is extra they use either cable wich equals a good 2 hrs for your project to transfer mackie makes one called the hdr pro the tascam is the most popular you just take the drive and plug it into a portable scsi bay and load the files in even direct dump into pro tools

Doulos, I wish you'd know what you're talking about before you post -- you often post on things you're clearly clueless about.........

Regarding the HD24 and the Fireport...... I actually use the Fireport, and the transfer rate is 400mbps - an album's worth of 24-track material transfers in several minutes - NOT hours....

Blue bear listen man the fireport is an option on the alesis hd that means it cost more to have the feature moron its not included in the base price go to the alesis web page and see if you dont belive me. jesus i know what im talking about as im in the market for a hd recorder ive studied the things inside and out here look for yourself cause i did.

Internal editing capabilities include cut, copy, paste, and track-move with undo. Or use the built-in Ethernet port to easily send files to a computer DAW

I never said the Fireport was included, nor that it was on the back panel. I refuted your claim that one is limited to a slow transfer rate.... with the Fireport OPTION, they are NOT limited at all....................

Blue Bear is 100% right here, despite some people's attempts at argumentitive misdirection and confusion about 'hot swapping' HD24 drives into a computer instead of getting the Fireport.

Another interesting wrinkle that the HD24 opens up (and other HD recorders) is to track to the HD, then bump over via Fireport to a computer for audio cleaning, wave editing and maybe some effects, and then bumping the tailored audio *BACK* to the HD24 for playback thru a larger analog mixer for mixdown. Just make sure to combine tracks enough to leave tracks 23/24 open to recieve the mixdown.

I'm going to be mixing a live performance a client wanted in this manner and I'll post the results. My preliminary mixes sound good with the nice A&H System 8 pre's and especially EQ on it.
