I recently picked up the M-Audio Firewire 1814... Since I am using a Powerbook for portability, I only have one firewire port. Does anyone know if it is alright to run this box (or any firewire I/O boxes) through a hub? I don't think there would be any problems, but just thought I'd ask before I fry my system.

I'm not sure about firewire, but with usb recording devices, you don't want to run them through a hub. The port may not recognize the device all the time (which can cause problems in your software) and you are using up bandwidth on the bus with other devices on the hub, which can compromise the quality of your recordings. I would suspect similar problems with firewire. For that reason, I would not use a hub when recording. You could also pick up a PCMCIA card with extra firewire ports for your other devices.

Can't you daisy chain Firewire devices (like SCSI devices) ?
None of my machines have Firewire, but I thought this is how Firewire stuff generally works.

Well, from other information I read I figured it was alright to use a hub. I could daisy chain them, but I had a hub anyway. After plugging it in, crossing my fingers and powering everything back on, it all worked great. Even with moderate I/O from both devices, I have had no dropouts or hiccups. Just thought I'd let other people know for the future, I had a hell of a time trying to figure out if it was alright to do.
