Can you put anything through them or just vocals? Could you put a violin, for example, through it and get 4 part strings? (or is this a very silly idea)

Not anything, dont plug a speaker output into it. Make sure the input levels are set well. It's really just an effects box, like any other. It just has effects that are designed to work well with vocals.

This is the 1st Harmony Box I purchased. I still own it. It's not a bad box for the money. I have never put anything but vocals into it.
