I'm about ready to start building some mineral wool bass traps. I'm going to go pick up 192 square feet of 8pcf tomorrow that I ordered. It's 2" thick, so I'll be doubling up for the corner traps.

I saw a picture tutorial, that now I can't find, in which someone was actually screwing owens corning 703 board into studs that connected to the wood frames.

I see here https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=149763&highlight=mineral+wool+pics that Mind Riot used 4" thick mineral wool, (and though the first pic shows chicken wire) he said he stopped using it half way through.

I was under the impression that mineral wool will sag inside that wood frame if it isn't connected to anything? Is this not true? Can you screw the wool into studs like you can the 703? For those who have made traps with mineral wool, what's your take on this?

I purchased some fiberclass mineral wool today...i had no wood, so i simply just screwed them on a piece of cardboard.

8lb mineral wool definitely won't sag. I still frame it (just use a friction fit) and drill holes in the frame sides for extra exposure. The panels are much better looking and much easier to hang if they're framed. The wood frames make wrapping with cloth easier and produce nice sharp edges or even bevels if you prefer.

Thanks guys.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go for some long 8' X 2' traps for the corners in the room. So, would the same design still apply? I would be using 4 mineral wool panels because they're two inches thick.

Yup - but I'd put a horizontal brace in the middle for a bit of extra 'friction.' I've seen it done without though.

Here's a pic of some absorbers I built with mineral wool and wood frames. Fabric on the front and back is enough to hold it in place. I did use a center brace for the 8' ones.

I used 703 for the ceiling ones because it will support itself without sagging and is very light.
