based on info gleaned from this board and others, i'm going to soon buy an audio interface for a new, windows (XP) -based laptop that i should have any day now.

don't think i'll ever need tons of inputs, 8 would be nice (for dumping in from my analog 8-track) but i bet i can get by with four, same with outputs. mostly i'll be recording one thing at a time, and working with softsynths and audiomulch, etc.

based on all this, unless i want to spend real money (for a laptop Layla or presonus firestation for instance) and have a bigger piece of machinery, i'm looking at:

the Quattro (but i've read so many bad things...)

Mbox (ties me down to Protools, so i think i'm ruling this out)

Audiophile USB (only two outs)

Edirol - various ones, seem cheapo kind of? dunno why

am i missing anything here?

thanks!

check it

The Quattro is good, the only problem is that there can only be 2ins and 2outs running at any particular time via the USB connection. So, if you're recording 4 tracks, you will only be able to playback after the recording has taken place and cables have been re-positioned. If you only intend on recording a max of deuce in's then you're good to go. The MBOX is good, no MIDI though, Edirol also came off very cheap to me. Quattro has some good specs...
