That's a big negatory for using 632 on the Foxtex R8.

The R8 is zeroed @ 320 nWb/m, which is pretty hot for a narrow track deck. Ampex/Quantegy 632 is a standard level tape more suited to 185/200 nWb/m. It is similar to Maxell UD 50-60, which is a 1.5-mil tape. It doesn't have backcoating either, which is very important for stability and smooth winding, especially on narrow tracks.

Fostex specifies either Ampex 457 or Scotch 227 for the Model 80. Scotch 227 is no longer an option because it is pretty bad for sticky-shed. I would avoid it.

If you can't find 457, look for RMGI LPR35, Quantegy 407, Scotch 207 and Maxell XL 35-90B as good alternatives. The latter three are +3 tapes, so keep your record levels slightly below 0VU and you'll be fine.

You can use 456 if you have the reel tension setup by a tech that knows what they're doing... but these machines were really made for thinner 1-mil tape like 457.

The good news... 632 should give decent results on your TEAC 2300.

thank you...great info

thanks beck,

thats why i wanted to check it out with you guys first...you all have "been there,..done that"

the last thing i want to do is use the wrong tape...i will prob score some of it for the 2300, and stick with your advice on the quantegy stuff.

btw, UPS tracking says its going to deliver today....not bad, one week from L.A. to clevo...

i will post a pic later on and hopefully the pic will show a fostex 80 in one piece...

clevo

thanks again
