I'd like to get into some digi-eq and comps. I'v read a lot of opinions that indicate the qreat majority are not quite up to profesional quality, Waves being a typical exception, if a little on the pricey end. (I went for the L2 which is working out as a great limiter so I don't doubt the would know what they're doing in other areas.)
I want to check out the Ozone Izotope that got good mention by Craig Anderton, but I thought it was interesting that they try to model analog non-linear traits instead of trying ot be 'neutral'.
Looking for guidence, what to not waste time on.
Thanks in advance.

<Depends on what system you are using - VST? TDM? etc etc.>
Of course. Sorry about that omission.
Cake 8, (likely to Sonar at some point), so direct-x.

:) Thanks M ! Nice to be "welcomed home"

misit - I normally work in TDM, but have done in VST and Direct X.
In general I have never been to impressed with the quality of plugins for VST and X. Most likely this is because the "pro" platform is TDM, and all the high end designers concentrate on TDM first prior to other releases. While TDM generally performs better, it is also more expensive.

In my opinion the only plugin for your platform which is really mindblowing in every way comes with its own processor, the TC Powercore. It provides for extremely accurate, high bitrate processing, enormous processing power, and a bundle of some of the best plugins ever developped. To me - the Powercore is the one combination everything else has to try and measure up to.

Oh my. I just found a similar question over at RAP- except with regard to TDM...not cutting it...

I guess I'll just have too take some chances, get my feet wet.

Hey, Sjoko - good to see you back. :)

Recently, I think it was Ed who said something about Waves and similar plugins being as good as it gets with software, but that outboard gear still has the edge. Comments?

The only thing I have found not to be nearly as good in software are compressors - have tried them all - and I think they all suck.
For the rest I've always been a huge TC fan, software as well as hardware.
There is one new plugin that rocks, at least in TDM form, don't know if they do a VST version, and that's the new Sony Oxford EQ

in my opinoins, almost all the plug ins ive tried have not really impressed me (im an outboard guy really), BUT...the waves stuff is very good i must say.

like sjoko, i dont like plug in compression either. some of the waves EQ's are pretty good though. i think the renaissance compressor from waves is really cool aswell. i like the sound of it. the waves stuff can be really good if you use it properly.

the waves reverb (and most of the other plug in reverbs) are pretty shite (IN MY OPINION). i must prefer hardware, not only for the sound, but the physical contact of the unit (may sound wierd but im sure some people will understand. this is the same reason i dont like software compressors. as well as the sound, i also hate not being able to see what ever compressor is doing. i like the fact that if i want to see whats happening with the snare drum, or if i want to alter it, i just look to my right and it's there, without left clicking here, and clicking there.

the only plug in i think is really awesome is the L2 Ultramizer from Waves.

good stuff.

I can see good compression being tough to do well (although in essence, the RNC is a digi-comp, sort of, I guess.), but isn't good eq just good clean math?

Try the ultrafunk plug-ins by Sonitus. I also have the Waves plug-ins but I gotta tell you. I like ultrafunk eq better, especially in the high end. You can crank it and it doesn't sound gritty. Also the compressor is quite good. Their effects are low cpu users also.
