Quadraverb GT as a mic preamp

Hi folks

Can anyone tell me if I will be able to get away with using my Alesis Quadraverb GT as a preamp for a Shure SM57 before the signal passes into my Audiophile 192 soundcard? I'm currently trying to do the same thing with an old Altai dynamic microphone but it's hardly picking anything up, even when it's right next to my guitar amp's grill and the amp is cranked up. (..and yes, I've got the input and output pots turned up on the Quadraverb!)

I can't tell if the problem lies with my cheap mic or in not having a dedicated mic preamp.

If I buy an SM57 and use it with my Quadraverb, would I be able to use it as a desk mic to pick up speech too?

Cheers

You should probably just pick up a real mic preamp,it'll make your life easier AND make your recordings sound better.

Can you use your cat as a dog?

:D

Get that thing to bark and roll over, and I'm sure you can figure out the whole "reverb-as-a-mic-pre" thing.

The Quadraverb is not a preamp, it's a digital fx box. These are two different devices built for different purposes.

The Quadraverb is a line level unit that is not designed to amplify mic level sources. A preamp is a device that is designed to amplify mic level sources to line level.

One of the most important aspects of doing audio work is to have the proper tools for the job. So get yourself a preamp for that SM57!

Thanks for your input. I realise that using the Quadraverb wouldn't be the ideal solution but I was just wondering if I could get away with it until I can rake some more money together. I'm on a very tight budget and am trying to make do with what I have for now.

I know that the Quadraverb is mainly a guitar effects unit, but I have seen it described as "QUADRAVERB GT PREAMP / MULTI-FX " and obviously am aware of its preamp features. However, a friend just gave it to me for nothing quite recently and I am still figuring out its capabilities. If it's purely a line-level device then I suppose that answers my question really!

Cheers everyone.

Just do a search for cheap preamp or scour the local stores for a used one,you can probably pick up something cheaper than you think.;)

It's line level only, it does not have a preamp built in.

If you card has 1/2" inputs, you'd be better off running the mic directly into the card than by putting it throught the QV GT.

BTW, the reason the GT is mentioned as a "preamp" is because it added distortion/overdrive to the unti to gear it more towards guitarists. It is NOT a preamp, CERTAINLY not a mic preamp.

Hey, for like $29 you can get an ART tube MP if you need a mic preamp and have no $$$.

Believe it or not, I'd never heard of the ART tube MP! I've done some research on it and it looks amazing for the money. Doesn't look like I'll get one for $29 / £15 though. (I'm English btw) You Americans probably don't realise how lucky you are - hardware always seems so much cheaper and more readily available for you than us Brits!

So anyway, I'd pretty much decided on getting one of those, but then I saw the ART tube MP Studio that has the vu meter. It's another 20 quid but I'd much rather have a meter than a single LED. I might just have to buy the MP Studio and wait a bit longer to get an SM57 mic!!

Thanks guys.

I have a korg 16000 and I have a Quadra verb hooked up to it in pursuit of better vocal recording, but does not sound the way I thought I would. 1. Do I really need the Quadra verb? 2.If so, what is the best setting on the Quadra verb for vocal recording? 3. If I don't need the Quadra verb, what is the best setting on the korg d1600 for vocals? My set up consisted of, the d1600, quadreverb, and an m-audio preamp. Thanks in advance

Personally, I own a Quadraverb... and it's never in the vocal chain... only use it as it was designed... as a guitar effects processor...

The idea is to record your vocals clean, then add effects after they're recorded. If you need to hear some reveb or delay while you're tracking use an aux send in your Korg, provided it has built in effects.

You may be better served by doing a search or posting a new thread that is more specific to your hardware and/or problems.
