Hi,

Is the PZM mic sold in Radio Shack these days (30-022, the one with the 1/8" plug) any good? Can it be modified like the old one?

No. The new ones are dung. I still see the "vintage" ones on ebay at $50.
 
Last I saw, Radio Shack wasn't selling a PZM mic at all. As you probably know, PZM is a registered trademark of Crown Audio and applies only to their mics (and those they license, such as the old Radio Shack PZM). I bought one of Radio Shack's newer "boundary" mics on sale, and the sound is tinny and fatiguing, even on spoken word recordings.

You'd probably be better off with a used Crown PZM 30 or 6D (provided you can supply phantom power) than with an old RS PZM. Crown's least expensive PZM, the Sound Grabber II, retails for $60 all over the web (list is about $109).
 
Hi guys
The new Radio Shack pzm mics are "voice optimised" for business conference use ,meaning the EQ is narrow band unlike the original Crown patent mics sold years ago.
My band has two old RS PZMs we use to tape rehearsals.The big advantage is that the echoes are cancelled and you get a remarkably clean sound.Crown Itl. still sells the full range PZMs.
