If I were going to record a grand piano with a PZM mic, where would I place them?
In the Piano or under it?

Both are viable options.

I would personally suggest attaching it on the underside of the lid using a double-sided tape that wont leave residue (a foam 3M tape worked well for me). I've achieve best results with a PZM this way leaving the lid open at a 45 degree angle while listening and moving the PZM. Once I found the spot I was looking for, then I broke out the tape and attached the sucker.

Under the piano will likely give you more character and resonance of the body, and I'd recommend this only if you are going to use the PZM in conjunction with other mics. Like maybe an X/Y setup over the strings.

Experiment! Try the lid open, try the lid closed... use as many different methods before you settle on what you like. There are a ridiculous number of approaches to mic'ing this scenerio, so...

The grand paino is a tough beast to tame! All in good fun though.

It helps to cover your piano with a moving blanket to eliminate that room noise
