...
Another question for the mastering guys...I had a friend say that mastering engineers and some other engineers prefer to use a program called Pyramix. He said the reason they like it is because "the headroom in Pyramix is extended above the final mixdowns headroom." Anyone familiar with this program and is it being used in studios?

I was reading in a mag about this mastering studio using it when they where mastering all the live shows for pearl jam. I don't know much about it tho.

Its the First DSD based DAW, based on proprietary DSP based H/W, downsamples to PCM when editing and adding efx.

They're installing a Pyramix system at the college I'm teaching at. I'll get you better feedback once I've had a chance to kick the tires.

By extended headroom I believe they are talking about processing at bit depths greater than 24 bit (the bit depth that most mixes currently come in at). Pro Tools, Sadie, and Sonic all do this, so it's nothing specific to Pyramix.

thanks guys....i'd love to hear what you think about it too, masteringhouse. this friend swears buy it. he also says people prefer to take the pro tools sessions and bring them into Pyramix because of the extended headroom. But if you're saying that pro tools already handles this, then it really doesn't make sense why he said that. I'll ask him what he means. thanks again.

Keep in mind that when discussing this with him:

Pyramix is 32 bit floating point (at least as of this article):

http://www.merging.com/2002/html/pyramix.htm

Pro Tools is 32 bit floating in LE systems. TDM systems 48 bit in over a 24 bit bus (this is different than processing and summing in 24 bit).

Be careful of claims (like the one in the Pyramix article above) about the competition only being 24 bit. It's not entirely true.
