remix 24 June 13

The above mix is based on the comments Greg made. Drums & sax are now dry - the bass was already reverbless.
I tweaked the levels on the guitar & sax solos a little and added just a tiny bit more guitar to the outro.

I'm listening to the 24th mix.

I like the guitar sound. Works well for this song.

I'm not sure about before, but the kick is really coming through. It might be too much now. See what other people think. I think you could probably boost the snare just a bit more. Snare sound is great.

I like the bass sound. The bass level seems right to me.

The vox are really dry and out front compared to the other tracks. The performance sounds a little "tentative" and reserved. Some pitch problems in spots.

That lead guitar sound is *really* different. I thought it was cool.

Hi ray - listening to mix of 24th.... much better now. Sounds like part 1 vocals are a wee bit lower than part II vocals. Other than that it's pretty well mixed for my taste....

I think the levels are better. Now I'm thinking the vocal timing is what's really throwing it all off for me. Not that you can do much about that, but that's what I'm hearing. After hearing your stuff with Joey's vocals, Terry's doesn't do much for me.

MMM,
Thanks mate. Terry's vocals are always a little polite. We're ppolite little people basically ^ that comes through in our music.
Ido,
Thnaks mate - I'll address the drop.
Greg,
To be fair part of the timing is due to a wide range or latency issues - this project has been from 4 track cassette through 5 different computers to the current version. The bass & guitars were late for a few years and I rerecorded them this year in time with the drums which were, themselves, dropped into a project that had dums by my old wandering TR505.
He's a different beast to Joe I know and each has their place. terry's forte is more folk rock than rock.
Terry contacted me before the above comments after a vocal less version to rerecord to. I'll put this project on hold until he's done just that.

Very nice guitars. sound cleanly and fluidly played. The basic impression though is a very diminished? sound. The solo too. I get the feeling the drums were recorded well, just not mixed right. Everything except the arpeggio guitar and maybe vocals sound too low or muffled. sometimes slamming everything that sounds too low and then putting a good compressor on the mix bush can do wonders for this. The sax reverb is inappropriate I think. Kinda hard to tell why since it's so low in the mix but sounds like the tail is too long. Cool song.

There's no reverb on the track ap except for the room sound when the sax was recorded.
Which mix did you listen to so I can work form there.
The drums are in a stereo file mixed by the drummer. They have to stay as they are.

Wow! I sort of remeber this, but not really. I do remember doing drums for a few of your tunes a few years ago, though. Man, time flies, baby.

HAHA! That ending is hilarious. I actually think it's pretty cool the way it is, in a Helter Skelter kind of way. :)

I really think this is a cool tune. Has a 60's Donavon thing to it.

Sounds better than I remember. Must have been listening to an earlier version. Didn't realize people were updating songs within threads. Still think sax could be better. Maybe it could use some reverb to match the guitars. They have a nice ambience. But I guess the whole point of this mix was no reverb! LOL! If nothing else I think it could come up some. I'm enjoying the tune. Cool lyrics.

Hey ray - just caught remix 24 (is that an approximate count or is it actually #24 :)?)

I think you're heading in the right direction. Reading back on the more recent comments, I think I agree with Triple M's assessments. Love the bass sound and the guitars at this point. Thought the kick was a little too loud and/or thumpy. Always like a ray remix...:listeningmusic:

I agree with this. After listening to a few versions leading up to 6/24... It's not so much the level so much as the kick sounds kind of woofy. To my ears it could use a little more click/definition, then you could probably bring it down a hair. I rarely want much click on the kick drum in stuff that's not heavy guitar rock, but here the guitars are so dense I think you need some kind of definition to cut through it. Those guitars do sound pretty nice...bass might be a touch loud. Vocals still need to come out more- maybe automate them. I like the abrupt ending. Is this song about the Doors?

Hello RAMI,
You did a grand job; it was quite a few years ago now.
I like the 1st posted ending too, it suits the song. I think I'll reinstate some of it.

Thanks Heat,
I used a "bass management" plug in to bring the kick drum up a little as the EQ didn'rt seem to do the job. Now I know there's more than enough I'll roll it back a little. Ta for the perspective.

FF,
Hopefully a new vocal is coming so I'll wait for that before tweaking. I do hear what you mean about the kick - it's be the "bass management" plug so will work on that while waiting for the vocal. I'll lower the bass guitar a smidge as well. Lyrics are Doors related.: Terry, our former drummer and I sat around a table & took turns paraphrasing The Doors as well as throwing in our own lines & writing them as we went. It didn't work. A couple of months later the drummer quit so we crossed out his lines and it worked. Odd but true.
