Putting one to bed

Man, first off this is a rocking tune. Second, the playing is exceptional. Not timing or skill issues. Cool solos. The drums are done nicely.

On the work headphones didn't hear the bass. But these headphones don't really render bass.

The vox are little more wet that I'd like. I'd say lower the effect on the vox and raise the volume. Don't worry about singing all the notes in tune. It helps but with the right attitude you can carry the song. You can always double it with another track in a lower octave and just let is sound however it does with two vox layers.

This has a very nice sound to it. :) Almost sounded Alice Cooperish in places. :)

Oh, and kids are the best. :)

There is some compression on the vocals. I think I added about 3:1 because of the prechorus. I had to belt that out to get it to sound right, and I overloaded my mic at least once during tracking.

Dude!! It's great to hear from you! I am glad that you appreciated this! The guitars (at least the 4 guitar parts that I tracked) were done by mic'ing two separate practice amps: a cheap yamaha 10-watt number and a Laney 25-watt. I blended the two together on each side of the stereo spectrum to achieve that sound. It's not the size of the dog in the fight....

"It's OK, Daddy's here.... Daddy's got you" is from the opening scene of "Finding Nemo"....

Coming from you, that means a lot. I did bring the vocals out a bit on my remix, and they do sit a bit better. There really isn't any other effects on there other than a little verb and some compression. I could dial them down, I guess.

Hey Rokket - finally had a chance to listen.... :)
Sounds a lot stronger than I remember - everything has pulled together and tightened up. The drums are the biggest difference that I hear - the timing issues from the old one, and the bigger, more muscular sound on the new version. The bass seemed to sit well, and was also stronger than I remembered from before. I enjoyed the guitar solos, and the almost perky flavor they brought into the mix. I would also like to hear more intimacy in the vocals somehow.....there were pitch issues, in all honesty, but as a song from his father to his daughter, that can be easily forgiven. The louder vocals as opposed to a more intimate sound seemed a little incongruous in comparison to the sweetness and honesty of the lyric - that would be my only real quibble overall....

I have known from the beginning that my voice isn't going to win on American Idol. I have always intended to get voice lessons. I just never find the coach and the time to be one...

Until you do, just work with what you got man...it's just fine. Like any other tool, you will eventually figure out how to use it. ;)

The one thing that most people don't realize is that the lead parts you are playing in the intro and after the first chorus were part of the outro solo, and were in the key of A. I had to pitch shift them and do some fancy cutting and pasting. It's a good thing your playing kept the attitude and feel so together!

Very cool job on the cut and paste action...you know how weird it is to hear something that sounds almost disturbingly familiar, only to realize "hey shit! I played that! kind of!" Great ideas on piecing this one together, and hopefully we can do some more soon. We gotta get Dogman down too...that guy's a blast to work with.

Hey if we play the cards right and the recording fairies smile upon us, it could be happening in about 2 weeks... I get back to San Diego and get my bass back in my hot little hands. I will have a laptop and my mr-8 with me too... ;)
 
I gotta be honest - something weird happened between here and there, because my drum track was a lot tighter on this end. It seems to be ever so slightly ahead at first, then seems to sync in around 2:30.

If I recall you're using Vegas, right? Vegas has a tendancy to automatically treat an imported file as a loop, and that can cause problems. To change that, right click on the waveform and select properties. The following box should come up. Just uncheck the loop box and hit OK.
