Have any of you tried using "PreVerb" in the digit mixing world? I've used it with analog tape to get a spooky sound, and I used it at the end of the vocal break on Howlin. Doing it in Pro Tools is much easier than the old fashioned way -- as is almost everything, except getting that tape smoothness.

I had 158 tracks with at least two plug-ins on each. I can get a full count if you like. The audio started skipping during playback, and I was forced to remove about five plug-ins before it would playback smoothly. I am running Pro Tools 10 and I think PT 11 is much more efficient with plug-ins so it might be time to upgrade...

Wow, I see your point! I know I didn't have anywhere near that many tracks or plug-ins! But, I think it would be pretty hard for anyone to expect any quad CPU (or less) to really run smoothly in that kind of a mix! If you really expect a computer to do that, then you had better upgrade to the Intel Xeon E5-2697v2 processor. It has 12 cores with 24 threads which all run at 2.7 GHz and turbo to 3.5 GHz` and some MB that work with this processor can work with 128 GBs of ram! Sounds like a dream pc, but you can buy or build this pc now. This CPU came out about one year ago, only thing that keeps me from building one is that the CPU, alone sales for around $3,000, and then can you imagine the cost of the MB and all that memory? And if that is not enough, you can actually buy a MB that will use two of these processors on the same MB!!! Oh well.
But really, did you think your computer should run smoothly in that kind of mix? That is a good question! Did anyone run this mix anywhere near that many tracks and plug-in and still has a smooth running computer? I might have had about 100 tracks, but not near that many plug-ins and my pc ran pretty smooth (before I installed the "SSD" drives it would not have done that.)
My pc runs:
i7 2600K CPU @3.40GHz turbo 3.80GHz
16 GBs ram, two "SSD" drives
GeFore GT 630 video card with 2GBs memory

But, with the word "Rules:"in front of rule #4." Share your thoughts, techniques and impressions on this thread." It certainly sounds like it is a rule to me, which to me a "rule" means something you have to do to inter this contest. How can you see it any other way? Isn't a rule a rule? Do you think they wrote 6 Rules , just so "you" could pick one out and not follow it? Just my opinion.

Totally agreed! There is no other way to interpret it, given that it was plainly listed as a "rule." If anyone believes the rule was optional, then by the same logic, the rule requiring you to "upload your mix" would be equally as optional. Which obviously is not the case.
 
I checked my system resource monitor while this session was running with 158 tracks and 347 plug-ins, and the amount of RAM being used was pretty low (much much lower than my max -- 32GB). The CPU was maxed out though. Pro Tools 11 is supposed to utilize the system RAM much more effectively and ease the drain on the CPU. They claim you can easily run over 1000 tracks!!!

Exactly!.. plus there's no way they are going to match our thoughts from this forum with our files submitted on PureMix.net as I'm sure many of us are using different nicknames.

Oh man, such a great mix! ...wasted opportunity. This is not what the producer wanted in the last chorus. Voice sounds very unnatural IMO. You can tell it's altered.
 
Stepan -- did you slow down the first part or pitch up the last part?

I just installed Pro Tools 11 and opened my Howlin session to see how it handled the system resources. Much Better! It's using twice the RAM (but still only about 2GB) and half the CPU power. I could easily add another 400 plug-ins!!!
 
Hello there! My name is ID and! So... first of all. Good vibe song, congrats to Amber and co creators! My impressions: good song with good harmonization and great production. modern extensive arrangement with fat stacking and alot of dynamics.
I have decided to mix in the box, using Cubase 7 DAW Steinberg stock, UAD and Slate Digital plugs.
I was doing alot of automation to add extra vibe to instrumental even to add a crescendo in last chorus. Also I have decided to use gentle vocal compression to keep a natural manner. To finish the picture, I have used extensive manual riding on the vocal to keep it strongly in the face. For space I was using widely sounded natural custom impulses, because I want this sounded more natural. Also, to add a "dance", I added gentle downbeat sidechain for some instruments and master buss sidechain compression to make vocal more clearer and 1/4th delay on chorus vocal to close gaps. Any comments please! )

I'm glad you liked my mix. I just wanted to last chorus brought a bit of freshness. I think it sounded a bit boring... so pitch up the last chorus
btw I put a bit of distortion on the vocal of the last part. . I think it added more energy

I loved mixing this song, it was a very good experience. Well I mixed the song pretty much ITB using my stock plugins that come with Logic Pro, also used the DeEsser from FabFilter, apart from that I just used the STC-8 from Crane Song to process dynamically the vocals in both verses and that's it. For Mastering, in the analog domain I only used a very tiny compression on the STC-8 and the HPF and the Pultec section on the 232P EQ from BetterMaker. In the Digital Domain I used the Linear Phase Equalizer from Logic, the digital emulation of Tape on HEDD from Crane Song and the ePure Limiter II from Flux.
I mastered it dynamically with about 12dBs of dynamic range.

Took a Stab at the Mix as well. Good Tracks, nice quality. Did my take on it with 3 Yamaha n8 Mixers all chained together, Cubase 7, Used some comps on the vocals from Uad, a bit of eq here and there with the Voice using mostly TDR VOS Slick Eq. Maag Eq for some sheen and that's about it... Hey any idea when they would announce the results?
